5. 5.

“ Islam ” literally means “ surrender ; submission ” signifying an external manifestation of one’s inner conviction towards “ obedience to the will of Allah ”.

The true meaning of “believe” or “ iiman ” is :

“ to be convinced in one’s heart/mind (Qolb); and declare with one’s tongue, and practice deeds in accordance with its pillars ”

What is - الأِسْلاَم - “ ISLAM ” ? AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

 7. 7.

So “ how does one begin to submit to Allah’s will ”?

This was succinctly enumerated by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. In what is referred to as the Pillar of Islam ( Arkaan-ul-Islaam ).

What is - الأِسْلاَم - “ ISLAM ” ? AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
 8. 8.

Islam is built upon Five (pillars):

[1] To bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah;

[2] And to establish the (Daily obligatory) Swolah;

[3] And pay out the Zakah (tax on wealth);

[4] And to make pilgrimage (Hajj) to the House) for those who has the means to (do) it;

[5] And to Fast (daily) in Ramadhan.

بني الأسلام على خمس

شهادة انْ لآإله إلا الله و أن محمدا رسول الله

صلاة

زكاة

حجّ البيت

صوم رمضان

What is - الأِسْلاَم - “ ISLAM ” ? AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
 9. 9.

As believe or conviction resides in a person’s heart, there is a need to first express ones’ commitment verbally – declaring it to others such that it becomes a solemn pledge or a promise, as well as a sign of one’s entrance into a social & spiritual contract with the universal community as Muslim.

What is - الأِسْلاَم - “ ISLAM ” ? AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
 10. 10.

So, the gateway into Islam is simple. Yet, this entrance – verbal declaration - leads to a whole program to be implemented so as to ‘build’ a truly Muslim personality of one who submits his whole-self to the Will of the Creator.

What is - الأِسْلاَم - “ ISLAM ” ? AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
 11. 11.

So, the gateway into Islam is simple. Yet, this entrance – verbal declaration - leads to a whole program to be implemented so as to ‘build’ a truly Muslim personality of one who submits his whole-self to the Will of the Creator.

Thus, the five pillars must be regarded as that educational/developmental program to nurture a personality.

What is - الأِسْلاَم - “ ISLAM ” ? AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
 12. 12.

Each of these five pillars, contains the medium through which the deeper meanings must impact a Muslim – leading to yet higher consciousness of how to transform his entire life into one of complete submission to the Will of Allah. For to be a Muslim is about “being” and “becoming”. It’s about ‘ haal ’ (spiritual state) and ‘ maqom ’ (station).

What is - الأِسْلاَم - “ ISLAM ” ? AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
 13. 13.

For to submit to Allah is to be in the presence with every witnesses of the Truth of the Lordship and Sovereignty of the One and only God – Allah, Who Alone is Deity worthy of worship; upholding and standing firm with justice, in accordance with the Way as established by His Final Messenger Muhammad s.a.w.

What is - الأِسْلاَم - “ ISLAM ” ? AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
 14. 14.

As these five pillars are inter-related, beginning with a solemn commitment, a Muslim is to strive to fulfil all these – as these are to be regarded as a Fardh ‘Ain (a personal obligation) unto those who enter into Islam:

“ O ye who believe! enter into Islam whole-heartedly (fully); and follow not the footsteps of the Evil One; for he is to you an avowed enemy.”

(Qur’an: Surah al-Baqorah: 2: 208 )

What is - الأِسْلاَم - “ ISLAM ” ? AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
 15. 15.

 “ There is no god but He: that is the witness of Allah His angels and those endued with knowledge, standing firm on justice. There is no god but He, the Exalted in Power, the Wise.”

(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3:18)

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.”

(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 256)

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
 22. 22. نَحْنُ نَأْخُذُ بِالظَّوَاهِرِ وَاللهُ يَتَوَلَّى السَّرَاءِرَ

“ We are to accept what is manifested and Allah will (be the One to) look into what is (secretly) concealed (in the person’s heart.)”

( Hadith of the Prophet s.a.w .)

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009

 29. 29. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DECLARATION

Our Prophet s.a.w. advises:

جَدِّدُوْاإِيْمانِكُمْ بِ لآإِلَهَ إِّلا اللهُ

( رواه ابن ماجه )

AllRightsReserved©ZhulkefleeHjIsmail2009
