WAGON TRAIN • In 1949, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the “Gold Rush,” plans were made for a Wagon Train to travel west from Lake Tahoe to Placerville (Old Hangtown) along Highway 50. • What began as a fun filled and exciting adventure has evolved into a true historic event, recognized as such in 1980 by the State of California, and in 1982 by the State of Nevada. • Pollock Pines celebrates the annual event on Pony Express Trail Brought to you by Z Group

  28. HISTORY • Fascinating California history permeates the area. The Sportsman’s Hall in Pollock Pines became a relay station of the Central Overland Pony Express here at 7:30am, April 4, 1860. • James Marshall’s accidental gold discovery was at Coloma, just a few miles northwest. • The first east-west wagon road into Northern California passed near here on what became known as Mormon Immigrant Trail.   29. PONY EXPRESS HISTORY “This was the site of Sportsman’s Hall, also known as Twelve-Mile House. The hotel operated in the late 1850’s and 1860’s by John and James Blair, a stopping place for stages and teams of the Comstock. It became a relay station of the Central Overland Pony Express here at 7:40 A.M., April 4, 1860. Pony rider William (Sam) Hamilton, riding in from Placerville, handed the express mail to Warren Upson who, two minutes later, sped on his way eastward.” Brought to you by Z Group
  30. LOCAL HISTORY IN MEMORY OF THE BRAVERY OF OUR PIONEER OFFICERS. Scene of the robbery of two coaches of the Pioneer Stage Line running between Virginia City, Nevada, and Sacramento, California, on the night of June 30, 1864, at about ten o'clock. Perpetrated by a gang of fourteen men, eight sacks of bullion and treasure box were taken. The leader of the gang represented that the money was to be used for the purpose of re-recruiting for the “JENKINSON LAKE, honoring confederate service. In attemption to capture the bandits Walter E. Jenkinson, our fellow a battle took place at Somerset in which Deputy Sheriff citizen who dedicated his life to this Joseph Staples was killed and Deputy Sheriff Geo. C. project which brought water to our Ranney badly wounded. Thomas Poole, one of the bandits, was captured and on Sept. 29, 1865, was city & fertile lands.” executed at Placerville.
