Arbaminch University, is officially inaugurated in June 2004. During this time it comprised four faculties, one institute and one school.

The Progenitor of the present Arba Minch University was the former Arba Minch Water Technology Institute (AWTI), which was established in 1986 with the objective of producing trained professonals in the field of water resources
At present, the university runs both undergraduate and post graduate programs, and enrolls about 10,000 students (2008/09 academic year) in the regular and continuing education (evening, weekend and summer) programs

Arbaminch University is one of the universities found in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR). It is located at Arba Minch town, 500 km south of Addis Ababa in the vicinity of unique natural and anthropogenic diversity

Admission to Arbaminch University
The Ministry of Education (MOE) determines the admission of regular students into the various degree and diploma programmes of Arba Minch University . The admission to newly introduced one –year less programmes is normally based on the results of Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance Certificate Examination (EHEECE) plus transcripts of the preparatory programme, and the Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination (ESLCE) and other recognized external examinations.
