  • 2. Indian Internet Population Out of the 25% of Indian population which stays in cities, 32% are PC literate. Out of those who are PC literate, 53% are actively using the internet (have used internet in past 1 month). 16% of 266 Mn urban population ie 43 Mn are actively using the Internet. Internet usage among urban individuals is low at 24%.
  • 3. In million 21% increase in PC literacy from 2008 to 2009. 26% increase in active internet user base from 2008 to 2009. In million An individual who knows how to use a PC has been classified as PC literate. An individual who has used the internet at least once in the last month Growing Urban Internet Population

    • Increasing number of cyber cafés & government
    • initiatives of e-kiosks has led to the smaller towns
    • overtaking the top 8 metros in Internet Usage in 2009.
    • Internet usage in small towns with population less than
    • 5 lakhs, has seen maximum growth from
    • 5% composition share to 36%.

    • School and College students contribute
    • 44% of the internet usage –
    • though mostly for educational
    • information search & entertainment.
    • Along with young men, they account
    • for 72% of internet usage.
  • 6. Internet Usage
    • The most popular point of connection to the internet is from cyber cafes.
    • As more businesses adopt the internet as their key infrastructure, accessing internet through offices continue to rise.
  • 7. Various Purposes of Accessing Internet
    • There has been an absolute increase in the use of internet as a medium for
    • socializing and leisure activities like downloading music and videos.
    • On account of availability of academic material online like CBSE ebooks &
    • online examinations for centralized tests such as CAT, searching education
    • related information has increased substantially compared to 2009
  • 8. Preference of Online Services
    • Overall people still largely use
    • the internet for email and
    • Information.
    • School & College student use
    • internet primarily for
    • Information & entertainment
    • related services.
    • Working professionals tend to
    • utilize the internet for
    • communication & information
    • Search. This group is also
    • receptive to ecommerce.
  • 9. Frequency of Internet Usage
    • Almost 50% of the internet users
    • are online at least 4-6 times a
    • week.
    • With more businesses adopting the
    • internet, the working
    • professionals access the internet
    • at least 4-6 times a week.
  • 10. Avg Time spent on Internet
    • Internet usage has gone up from
    • 9.3 hrs/week to 15.7 hrs/week
    • ie a steep 70% rise.
    • The internet’s current status of
    • offering ease of communication
    • and networking with the plethora
    • of social networks & applications
    • that encourage stickiness, has
    • made it increasingly compelling.
