  • Challenges Many people cannot effectively contribute ideas in the product development process or their communication abilities are inhibited by the lack of an easy-to-use design app that lets them create a sketch or modify an existing CAD design. Expert CAD users may also need different capabilities at different times in the design process to efficiently communicate ideas and design changes. One monolithic CAD system is overkill, especially for casual users. Quite often, there is too much functionality and complexity in the one size application.   • Challenges As needs arise, users need to leverage both the flexibility/speed of direct modeling and the power/intelligence of parametric modeling within the same product development process. Casual users may also need to make simple edits to simplify a model or propose changes in the direct mode, but then need those changes to persist when further edits or work is done to the CAD model in the parametric mode. Expert users may need the speed and flexibility to edit someone else’s work in the direct mode and then continue modeling in the parametric mode. Today, users cannot not move back and forth between these two modeling paradigms and retain the design intent and intelligence created in each respective paradigm. For example, a user cannot start in the parametric mode, make direct edits and then return to the parametric mode without losing information or even the edits themselves (aka “round trip” between paradigms).   • Challenges Working with data from multiple CAD systems is difficult, especially if customers need to edit and manipulate data from multiple sources. The different CAD systems do not work together well. Time is wasted translating and repairing data, and errors are made. Legacy data remains trapped in old tools that cannot be retired. The ability to edit foreign data directly, allows users to make design changes faster, save time and reduce errors. Product data will also be preserved. Project Lightning enables users to open and edit data from legacy sources. Project Lightning also creates a STEP file of data so other applications will be able to use it now or in the future.
