Slide 1: Who killed Jesus? I believe Jesus suffered under Pontius Pilate… By: Sonny Naz/Pastor March 25, 2007
Slide 2: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate.
Slide 3: Who killed Jesus? A. Historically
Slide 4: “Suffered” sums up everything that happened between his birth & his death. • Isaiah calls him “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief”. • When he was born, Herod tried to kill him • When he began his ministry, the people in his hometown took offense at him (Mark 6:3) • In the closing hours of his life, he was betrayed by Judas and denied by Peter.
Slide 5: Why do they singled out Pilate? Pilatehas the power to put Jesus to death or to free him being a governor of his time Pilate condemned Jesus even though he knew he was innocent
Slide 6: Why was Pilate’s name mentioned? Pilate is the person who condemned Jesus to die Toestablish a point in space- time history for the death of Christ. Pilate gets mentioned in the death of Christ because he was there.
Slide 7: Who killed Jesus? A. Historically B. Spiritually
Slide 8: Spiritually… The truth is that it was our sin that nailed Jesus to the cross. In Isaiah 53:4-5 it says, “Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”
Slide 9: Four times the prophet uses the word “our.” Our infirmities. Our sorrows. Our transgressions. Our iniquities. “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:6
Slide 10: Our sins drove Jesus to the cross. But he did not go unwillingly. If our sins drove him there, it was his love for us that kept him there.
Slide 11: Who killed Jesus? A. Historically B. Spiritually C. Ultimately
Slide 12: Who is ultimately responsible for the death of Jesus Christ? According to the Bible, God takes responsibility for the death of his Son. This truth is not blaming or accusing God but establishing a fact that no one can stop God’s plan.
Slide 13: Isaiah 53:10 NIV NKJV “Yet it “Yet it was pleased the the Lord’s will LORD to to crush him bruise Him; and cause He has put him to suffer.” Him to grief.”
Slide 14: Acts 4:27-28 “Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done”.
Slide 15: That’s why Jesus could truthfully take responsibility for his own death: “I lay down my life - only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again.” John 10:17-18
Slide 16: No one “killed” Jesus against his will. If God had not willed for his Son to die, and if Jesus had not willingly laid down his life, all the armies of ancient regime could not have killed him.
Slide 17: Isaiah 53:5 says, “…He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds we are healed.”
Slide 18: When Jesus stood on trial before Pilate, it wasn’t Jesus on trial. It was Pilate.
Slide 19: Today Jesus is still on trial in every human heart. Each of us will be judged and our judgment will depend on what we believe about Jesus. What about you? What is your verdict?
