International School of NKUHT National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality & Tourism is planning to establishthe International School, scheduled to operate officially starting Fall 2012. Despite that it is currently still under development, there are already 2departments and 2 programs in operation which will eventually be placed within theInternational School. Two new international programs were introduced in Fall 2010, the Bachelor’sProgram in Tourism Management and the Bachelor’s Program in Chinese CulinaryArts. In addition, the school will also include two existing departments of foreignlanguages: the Department of Applied English and the Department of AppliedJapanese. All four programs/departments are 4-year Bachelor’s Degree programs, with a1-year industrial internship. The international programs are taught entirely inEnglish.

Int’l Culinary Arts Program The Bachelor’s Program in Chinese Culinary Arts (also known as theInternational Culinary Arts Program, ICAP) is a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree program,equivalent to the ‘3+1’ program in the British education system. The program isconducted in English, covering the professional subjects, elective subjects and thegeneral college and university requirements. Multi-stream culinary courses are featured as majors in this program,including Western Culinary Arts, Chinese Culinary Arts, Chinese Dimsum, Bakery,Mixology etc. Each year, the program had elicited the participation of international teachersto teach certain professional courses within the field of Hospitality & Tourism. As forFall 2011, we recruited Chef Derek Bruce from New Zealand and Professor MichelleMcCarthy to teach Western Culinary Arts and Introduction to Hospitality & Tourismrespectively. We would like to invite passionate international students all over the worldwho are interested in this program to join us.

Entry Requirement The Ministry of Education (MOE) requires a minimum 6 years SecondarySchool as a qualification to apply for Higher Education in Taiwan. Once you are qualified, you can choose your status of residence in Taiwan, aseither a Foreign Student or as a Chinese Student. There are no special requirements for applying as a Foreign Student, but inorder to qualify to apply as a Chinese Student, you need proof that at least 1 ofyour parents is ethnically Chinese, and your education qualification must berecognized by MOE in Taiwan. As for those who do not fulfill the above qualifications for applying asChinese Students, you can choose to attend the Preparatory Program for OverseasChinese Students offered by National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). Upongraduating, you will be allowed to choose from a wide selection of highereducation institutes.

Scholarship & Financial Aids A wide range of scholarships are available for international students. Thisincludes a generous amount of NTD 25’000 per month from the Ministry of ForeignAffairs, Academic awards of NTD 10’000 per semester from the Ministry ofEducation, Academic awards of NTD 6’000 per semester from NKUHT and manymore. Besides, NKUHT also offers partial/full tutorial waives in exchange forcommunity service. Part time jobs are also available through application withdifferent departments within the school, with a minimum pay of NT 98 per hour.Financial loans are also available from certain units. All international students are allowed to a waiving of the dormitory expenses,and the practicum fee is halved as well.
