  • 2. I. Affixes An Affix is a morpheme added to a word to change its function or meaning. There are three basic ways to do this: prefix, infix, suffix.
  • 3. I. Affixes A. Prefix - is an affix that is joined before a root. or stem. Common Prefixes with only one meaning Prefix Meaning Example ben- good beneficiary circum- around circumference equi- equal equivalent extra- outside extracurriccular non- not nonparticipant intra- within intrapersonal intro- into introduction

Prefix Common Prefixes with more than one meaning Prefix Meaning Example dis- opposite, away from dislike im-, in-, it-, il- not, into impossible, intimate mal-, mis-, bad, wrong malfunction pre- instead of, before, in favor of preview re- back, again restart sub- under, below substance un- opposite of, not unproductive

  • 13. II. Synonyms A word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another in the language. Examples: happy-joyful yelp-cry big-huge small-little
  • 14. III. Antonyms A word opposite in meaning to another. Examples: warm-hot love-hate fast-slow
  • 15. IV. Homonyms a word pronounced the same as another but differing in meaning, whether spelled the same way or not. Examples: ad-add suite-sweet pane-pain
