    • C. Understanding
    • Understanding as expressed usingany three of the six facets understanding:Explanation, Interpretation, Application,Empathy, Perspective, and Self-Knowledge,or any other discipline-based manifestation orindicator of understanding. The facets areexplained (adapted from the paper,“Understanding by Design Framework in thePhilippines” by McTighe and Grant Wiggins,p.5) as follows: When students understandthey can
    • • explain concepts, principles, and processes byputting them in their own words, teaching them toothers, justifying their answers and showing theirreasoning;• interpret by making sense of data, text, andexperience through images, analogies, stories andmodels;• apply by effectively using and adapting what theyknow in new and complex contexts;• demonstrate perspective by seeing the big pictureand recognizing different points of view;
    • • display empathy by perceiving sensitively andputting one’s self in someone else’s shoes;• have self-knowledge by showing meta-cognitiveawareness, using productive habits of mind andreflecting on the meaning of the learning andexperience.Understanding may be assessed based on thefollowing criteria: Breadth of understanding (connection to awide range of contexts) and depth of understanding(use of insights, reflection)
    • Transfer ofUnderstanding
    • Transfer of understanding may beassessed as demonstrated through thefollowing: Products – outputs which arereflective to learner’s creativeapplication of understanding; or Performance – skilful exhibition orcreative execution of a process,reflective of masterful application oflearning or understanding
