When was he born?
Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809
in a log cabin in Kentucky
How big was his family?
Abraham lived on a farm with his father
named Thomas and a sister named Sarah
His mother died in 1818 and he had a step-
mother named Sarah Bush Lincoln
They went to school 2 miles away from the
farm
What did he do growing up?
Abe read lots of books, many about the law,
and earned his first dollar rowing a boat
When he was 21 he moved to New Salem,
Illinois and worked in a general store.
People started saying how honest he was
Was he in any wars?
Abraham was trained in the Army and fought
in the Black Hawk war of 1812. It was a fight
over land.
What did he do after the war?
Abraham Lincoln ran for the Illinois State
government but lost
He opened his own general store, but was
not a good businessman
The store closed in May 1833
Did he try government again?
He ran again for Illinois State legislature in
1834 and won!
He decided to become a lawyer from all the
books he read and did that in 1836
Did he get married?
Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd in 1842
What did he do to stop slavery?
In 1850, slavery was a big problem with large
farms and plantations with slaves
He thought it was unfair and cruel
In 1858 he ran against Stephen Douglas, who
supported slavery.
Lincoln lost this election
When did he become president?
In 1860 he ran for and became President
It was a tough race since he had support
in the northern states but the southern
states supported slavery
What was the Emancipation
Proclamation?
In 1863, Abraham Lincoln gave a speech as
President to end slavery right after the
Battle of Gettysburg
Some states in the Union still did not stop
slavery after this
In 1864 he became President again by
winning another election
When and where was he
assassinated?
On April 14, 1865 he and his wife went to
Ford Theater to watch a play
Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes
Booth
John Wilkes Booth did not like the
President’s ideas about slavery
