Trend Micro Cloud Computing: Vendor Selection Case Study (as cloud user) Situation: Trend Micro has previously implemented Siebel SFA solution, but not all features met user needs. Salesforce.com (SFDC) was proposed as an alternative ‘re-implementation’ solution. Selection Process: A comprehensive vendor selection process was conducted to evaluate Salesforce.com’s feasibility at Trend Micro’s IS environment. Decision: Siebel was selected over SFDC. Main reasons: Complex Trend Micro ERP environments – SFDC would complicate this more by introducing complex interfaces, etc. Existing Siebel resources need to be re-trained Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) did not justify switch to SFDC Latest Update: Siebel SFA was re-implemented, and has gone live with happy users. Situation:

Trend Micro has previously implemented Siebel SFA solution, but not all features met user needs. Salesforce.com (SFDC) was proposed as an alternative ‘re-implementation’ solution.

A comprehensive vendor selection process was conducted to evaluate Salesforce.com’s feasibility at Trend Micro’s IS environment.

Decision:

Siebel was selected over SFDC. Main reasons:

Complex Trend Micro ERP environments – SFDC would complicate this more by introducing complex interfaces, etc.

Existing Siebel resources need to be re-trained

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) did not justify switch to SFDC

Latest Update:

Siebel SFA was re-implemented, and has gone live with happy users.

Lessons Learned: Do Your Homework Don’t jump on the hype, but keep things very real and practical Use cloud computing only when it makes solid sense – do your homework to assess all aspects Cloud computing ‘sometimes’ does not reduce system complexity and not always cost-effective Always justify with ROI analysis Don’t let the hype affect your decision (don’t do it because it sounds fancy) Cloud computing is very closely related to SOA.
