On Faith and Hope
1.
2. The Decline of Self-Sufficiency
When I was growing up, being on
government programs, then called
the dole, was considered
shameful. People took care of
themselves, and if they needed a
handout, they generally wanted to
do something in exchange for it.
Of course, there were alcoholics and
panhandlers, and certainly there
were poor people, but by and large,
people made do or did without.
And instead of 'no child left behind', those students who weren't very
motivated by school went to vocational classes so they would be able to
make a living when they got out of school.
3. Would You Like Fries With That?
It has come to the point in our world where an incredible number of people are
dependent on the government for their living. Europe is toppling financially and
in the United States, nearly half of us pay no income taxes.
Many young, able-bodied people would rather go on welfare than do an honest
day's work. Saying, "Would you like fries with that?" would be too
humiliating. Too many people have lost faith in the idea that they can hope for a
better future if they roll up their sleeves and get to work.
4. In Hebrews 11: 1, Paul said, "Now
faith is the substance of things hoped
for, the evidence of things not seen."
5. We have faith that the sun will rise in the new day.
We have faith that the school bus will pick up our children in
the morning and bring them back to us in the afternoon.
We have faith that the car coming toward us will stay in its
own lane.
Faith is not just a word relegated to religion. It is in
the very fabric of our beings.
We have to have faith or we would not be
able to function from minute to minute.
6. Surviving is NOT Thriving
If faith is the substance of things
hoped for, then hope is also a
necessity of our well-being. It
seems that when people fall into
a government “safety net”, it
frequently becomes a cage from
which they, and often their
progeny, never emerge.
It becomes a way of life that is
devoid of the hope that they can
change their lives from
dependence to independence,
and without hope, they have no
faith that their lives will ever be
better.
7. Of course, it is useless to pretend that you have faith and hope if you are not
willing to strive and take responsibility for your actions.
But faith and hope can be the building blocks to a better future: faith in what
you can become; faith that you can achieve; faith that you can live your
dreams.
Don't be willing to settle for subsisting. Have hope and let your faith be the
evidence of things you cannot yet see.
