Disciple's habit prayer and fastingPresentation Transcript
A Disciple’s Habit Prayer All who have walked with God have viewed prayer as the main business of their lives.
“ A man prayed, and at first he thought that prayer was talking. But then he became more and more quiet until in the end he realized that prayer is listening.”
“ before day, He rose and went out to a lonely place and there He prayed” Mark 1:35
TO PRAY IS TO CHANGE
If we are unwilling to change, we will abandon prayer as a noticeable characteristic of our lives
I have so much business I cannot get on without spending three hours daily in prayer – M. Luther
God does nothing but in answer to prayer- J. Wesley
I withdraw from my business 7 times a day for prayer – A. Judson
God always meets us where we are and slowly moves us along to deeper things
“ This is how you should pray:”
“ Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven out debtors.
And do not lead us to temptation, but deliver us from evil” Matthew 6:9-13
The Simple Prayer
Pray as you can, not as you can’t
To believe that God can reach us in the ordinary junctures of daily life is the beginning of prayer.
The only place God can bless us is right where we are, because that is the only place we are!
Simple prayer involves ordinary people bringing ordinary concerns to a loving and compassionate Father.
Prayer of Penthos
Blessed are those who mourn” Matthew 5:4
Recognition: there’s a problem and only God can solve it.
Confess: I am guilty
Ask for Forgiveness: Forgive my deeds
Repent: I will not repeat those deeds
Receive: God’s pardon
Obey God’s direction
Sanctification: (1) Recognition , (2) Confess :“I” am the problem, (3) Repent of Self-Centeredness and Fully Surrender All: who I am and all that I do, (4) Receive : the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, (5) Go forth in the power of the Holy Spirit an make disciples.
Joy is the result of a heart bowed in contrition. “those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy” Ps. 126:5
God never despises “a broken and contrite heart” Ps 51:17
Prayer of Examen
“ Yahweh, you examine me and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts” Ps. 139:23
Examen of the Exterior
How has God been presented to us?
How have we presented God to others?
How have we responded to His presence?
How have we been instruments of His grace?
Rehearse the mighty deeds of God
Examen of the Interior
My time in God’s presence today, resulted in the following…
How are my thoughts, desires, attitudes, values, actions different from: yesterday, last week, last month, last year
If the examination is solely a self-examination, we will always end up with excessive praise or blame.
In our world, how can we understand or even believe.. “ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you?” John 15:7
“ If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you .” John 15:7
“ You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.” James 4:3
Prayer of Relinquishment “not my will” Luke 22:39-46
Sanctification: Do we demand that Christ get down here and solve our problems or do we join Him on the cross?
“ It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:19-20
A confident trust in the character of God produces the death of my own will
“ God creates everything out of nothing… and everything which God is to use He first reduces to nothing” S. Kierkegaard
A Pattern of Prayer: Self-Emptying, Surrender, Abandonment, Release, Resurrection
Prayer of Relinquishment
When it seems as if God has vanished. ( Examen )
If we could make the Creator of heaven and earth instantly appear at our beck and call, we would not be in communion with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
We love God more than the gifts God brings .
Purification of the Self
Exterior Results (they are no longer what moves us)
