The iris controls the amount of light entering the eye by contracting radial or circular muscles within the iris to change the pupil diameter. The eye has three cell layers - an outer layer of photoreceptors (rods and cones), a middle layer of bipolar neurons, and an inner layer of ganglion cells. The iris permits changes in pupil diameter to regulate the amount of light entering the eye.
