  • 1. Justice Adams 10/23/13 6th period Book Project #2 A New Ending to “Forged by Fire” Summary The novel, “Forged by Fire,” by Sharon Draper is about a woman named Monique who was in an abusive marriage; her husband, Jordan, emotionally and physically abused her whenever he was mad or drunk. He sexually abused their daughter, Angel, and physically abused Monique’s son, Gerald. Gerald was now living with his mother and Jordan after his “Aunt Queen,” who he’d lived with for nine years, died of a heart attack. Monique had been afraid to leave Jordan and is forged to part with him after a fire broke out in their apartment that claimed his life. As Jordan had attempted to rape Angel he didn’t realize that she’d left hotdogs cooking on the stove that would start the fire. The New Ending Jordan’s blackened eyes glistened with the swiveling blue lights from the back seat of the police squad car as Monique continued cracking her knuckles eyeing him as though she would jump through the window and finish him. For once he felt what it was like to be battered and confined. Monique had snapped after learning that Jordan had raped Angel and battered Gerald for trying to protect her; a mother’s intrinsic inclination to protect her children transcends her fears. Jordan served six years in prison, was placed on a sex offender registry, and never allowed to go anywhere near Angel, Gerald, or Monique ever again. Monique divorced Jordan while he

Monique also bought Gerald a basketball set and Angel a dancing outfit that she’d wanted, and deposited $100,000 into college savings accounts for each of them. Monique also went to college herself and majored in English and Fashion Design. Monique became a mega billionaire and world renowned business consultant, fashion designer, and writer. Her very first book, “Freedom of Choice: A Family’s Guide to Surviving Domestic Violence,” was an instant New York Times best seller. Gerald went on to become a professional basketball player, # 21 for the New York Knicks, while Angel followed in her mother’s footsteps in becoming a writer, fashion designer, and model. Monique and Angel attended Gerald’s basketball games, and Gerald attended their fashion shows. They lived happily ever after.
