5. Mentality of Greeks as formed from
the ancient times
.
Homer in "Odyssey“(1-3) 8th century BC:
ἄνδρα μοι ἔννεπε, μοῦςα, πολύτροπον, ὃσ μάλα πολλὰ
/ πλάγχθη, ἐπεὶ Τροίησ ἱερὸν πτολίεθρον ἔπερςεν
we meet the Greek who love travelling and getting into adventures, are attracted by the unknown,
have an ardent desire to see
new places but mainly want to discover the mind, the thinking and the mentality of the people they meet.
However, when they are away from home they feel an incessant
nostalgia
for their homeland as it is cited in "Odyssey"
Αυτάρ Οδυςςεφσ, ιζμενοσ και καπνόν αποθρώςκοντα νοήςαι, ησ
γαίησ θανζειν ιμείρεται
which means that Odysseus would be so happy if he were able to see smoke coming out of the chimney of his house that would not mind dying afer that.
Neither wealth nor luxury in Kalypso's island nor even promises to be immortal could take him away from his target which was to return home.
Another everlasting value is
hospitality
. Zeus himself was the protector god.
Hospitality means: I love the stranger and I offer him honor, protection, food, bath before even learning their identity and I give them a souvenir present
uppon their departure. This behaviour is met today even in the most remote village and is shown by the poorest and the richest with no distinction.
One of the most outstanding attributes of the greek people is the "greek filotimo". The word "FILOTIMO" cannot be translated to any other language and
its meaning is a combination of dignity, pride and dedication unwritten moral principles.
And I left for the end the word "ΑΓΑΠΗ". In no other language the equivalent word includes all the aspects of the word ΑΓΑΠΗ. Not only romance , not only
parental affection but love for the friend for the fellow-man, love for nature and life, love for family and homeland.

Mykhnesomhros and mytologyHellenistic era begins with the death of alexander the great
In order to understand modern Greeks , strange though it might seem ,we have to recall Homer and what we were taught in our school years about his poems. Most of the attributes of the homeric heroes, which were described by Homer in the 8th BC centrury were found unchanged in the greek folk songs of the 18th century and further surviving, characterise the greek people of th 21st century
