4. Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is
not important or not known, however, who or what is
performing the action.
Has a corresponding sentence in the active voice.
The subject receives the action of the verb.
Can be used, also, in various tenses.
Only transitive verbs are used.

5. Construction of the Passive Voice

6. Voice Subject Verb object
active Everybody Drinks water.
passive Water is drunk by everybody.
The object of the active sentence becomes
the subject of the passive sentence.
7. Use the Passive Voice
• Don’t know who performed the action
The bank was robbed yesterday.
• To avoid mentioning the agent
A criminal is sometimes regarded as a hero.
• To focus on the receiver or the result of an
action instead of the agent.
The thief was caught by the detective.
