  • 1. CHAPTER 11 SUFFIXES: ‘DIPSIA’ AND ‘URIA’
    PRESENTED BY: YASMIN BUTT
  • 2. SUFFIX: ‘DIPSIA’
    THE SUFFIX ‘DIPSIA’ MEANS THIRST
IT CAN BE COMBINED WITH ‘POLY’ TO FORM THE TERM ‘POLYDIPSIA’
  • 3. MEANING OF ‘POLYDIPSIA’
‘POLY’ MEANS MANY AND ‘DIPSIA’ MEANS THIRST
THE COMBINED TERM MEANS EXCESSIVE THIRST
‘POLYDIPSIA’ IS USUALLY AN INITIAL SYMPTOM OF DIABETES
IT CAN ALSO OCCUR IF DIABETICS FAIL TO TAKE THEIR MEDICATION OR NEED AN INCREASED DOSAGE
  • 4. DIABETES AND SUGAR METABOLISM
DIABETES IS A CONDITION CAUSED WHEN THE PANCREAS ARE NOT ABLE TO PRODUCE SUFFICIENT INSULIN TO METABOLIZE GLUCOSE IN THE BLOOD
AS A RESULT, THE BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS ARE ELEVATED AND EXCESS GLUCOSE IS EXCRETED THROUGH LARGE AMOUNTS OF URINE LEADING TO FLUID DEPLETION AND EXCESSIVE THIRST.
  • 5. OTHER CAUSES OF ‘POLYDIPSIA’
CHANGE IN OSMOLALITY OF EXTRACELLULAR BODY FLUIDS
    HYPOKALEMIA( LOW POTASSIUM LEVELS)
CONDITION CAUSING HYPOVOLEMIA SUCH AS HEMORRHAGE
  • 6. SUFFIX: ‘URIA’
    THE SUFFIX ‘URIA’ MEANS URINE
IT CAN BE COMBINED WITH ‘GLYCO/S’ TO FORM THE TERM ‘GLYCOSURIA’
  • 7. MEANING OF ‘GLYCOSURIA’
‘GLYCO/S’ MEANS GLUCOSE AND ‘URIA’ MEANS URINE
THE TERM ‘GLYCOSURIA’ MEANS GLUCOSE OR SUGAR IN THE URINE
GLYCOSURIA USUALLY OCCURS IN PEOPLE WITH UNCONTROLLED DIABETES
  • 8. WHY DOES ‘GLYCOSURIA’ OCCUR?
‘GLYCOSURIA’ USUALLY OCCURS WHEN BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS EXCEED A CERTAIN LEVEL (160-180MG/DL)
THIS LEVEL IS CALLED THE RENAL THRESHOLD OF GLUCOSE(RTG)
KIDNEYS ARE NOT ABLE TO REABSORB ALL OF THE FILTERED GLUCOSE BEYONG THE RTF, LEADING TO EXCRETION IN URINE
  • 9. ANOTHER CAUSE OF ‘GLYCOSURIA’
ANOTHER LESS COMMON CAUSE IS AN INTINSIC PROBLEM WITH GLUCOSE REABSORPTION IN THE KIDNEYS
    THIS IS TERMED RENAL GLYCOSURIA
THIS IS NOT RELATED TO ELEVATED GLUCOSE LEVELS
