      Increasing Human Dignity by Reducing Insensitivity Towards Violence

      • To make people realize the ignorance of the certain types of violence.
      • Internalizing the fact that being exposed to violence and ignoring of it decreases the individuals’ dignity.

    • Our problem
      • Increase in the insensitivity towards violence.
      • Decrease of respect towards oneself and the others due to the increase of insensitivity

      ( While the violent scenes being shown on TV increase, sensitivity towards them decreases.

    • Violence has an extensive meaning.Many people are not aware of what violence exactly contains.Also, we had not extensive knowledge about types of violence before we took the non-violence education course by Dr. Hayal Köksal.
      We talked to our friends and understood that even people who are in university level have not extensive knowledge about this issue.As prospective teachers we felt that we have responsibilities for this issue. We analyzed the researches about this issue and we see that there is not sufficent number of researches about insensivity against violence.

    • Yeditepe University Faculty of Comunication, Radio- Tv- Cinema Department Com 422 Mass comunication researches , “Effects of violence based computer games on teenegers.”In this research ,violence is stated as a method to solve problems.

    • In this table taken from the same research indicates that 57% of teenegers are not affected by playing these games.It is an indication of how teenegers naturalize and adopt violence.

    • What have we done?
      • Brain storming
      • We made interviews with elementary and high school teachers.(Common answer: there is no lesson about violence in schools but adolescents and their parents are given seminars about violence. Thanks to these seminars both students’ and family-students relations are developing positively.)
      • We asked to 12 person how the training should be given about violence.( Answers: Real life examples should be used, panel discussions and seminars should be organized, striking videos should be watched,a respectable environment should be established, it should be expalained via musical or artistic activities.)
      • Questionnaire administered to 2 groups including 30 persons.( Control and experimental groups)
      • We made discussions with Büperc and Bürem.
      • We made conferences with faculty members in our university.

    • Our survey
      We have prepared a questionnaire to measure the people’s susceptibility to violence. We asked 18 question which includes cultural, physical, spiritual, verbal, psychological, sexual, financial, moral violence and neglect. The questionnaire also includes demografic questions (Birth place, financial conditions, having a house or car and educational backgrounds.)
      We gathered data from 60 people, 30 of them taking a course non-violence in education (experimental group) and other 30 people not taking the course (control group). However, one person who filled the survey randomly renomed. All people pariticipating the questionnaire are university students with average of age 21.66. We analyzed our findings with t-test, chi square test and a type of factorial ANOVA.
    • The Results of Survey
      Independentsample t test showed that there is a significant difference between groups who took lecture about violence and not in terms of verbal, psychological, emotionalviolence,financial abuse and neglect. That is, the person who takes violence education is more sensitive to these types of violence. We have not found any significant difference between groups in terms of cultural, physical, spiritual and sexual violence
      Also one way between factorial ANOVA showed that there is an effect of the group on total score of participant. Experimental group have higher scores in total.
    • Also we did chi square test to analyze whether there is a relationship between their background and their total score. More high score means more sensitivity to violence. We cannot find any association for total score in terms of gender, where they were born, situation of whether they have a car or a house, their financial situation, what type of violence they firstly think , what type of violence they witness. But we found that there is a relationship between what type of high school they graduated and their total score.
      • As a result, we had argued that people are unaweare of the fact that what is exactly violence. They sometimes can unconsciously exert violence or they are exposed to violence but they are not aware. We encountered different types of violence in HayalKöksal’s lecture. We want to figure out scientifically unawareness about what is violence. The findings support our argument. Unfortunately, people who did not take violence education are not as sensitive as people who take violence education. We have to tell people what is exactly violence before telling that do not exert violence.

      To Organize seminars in order to inform people.
      To organize music, theatre, drama and sport activities in schools by putting ‘non violence’ to forefront.
      To conduct our survey to many people with different demographic information in order to make our survey more valid and credible.
