  3. 3. SAP PORTAL PORTFOLIO DEPLOYMENT OPTIONS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Over the past years, the portfolio of SAP’s portal products have evolved from the single SAP NetWeaver Portal to include several additional options – The SAP HANA Cloud Portal, a managed portal based on the HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) and a virtualized portal based on the SAP Cloud Appliance Library (CAL). This document is aimed at describing the various deployment options for an SAP based portal and provide a guideline for choosing the right one for a specific business project. Figure 1 - High Level Comparison PORTAL PORTFOLIO DEPLOYMENT OPTIONS In this section, we will review the different options available to customers as part of the SAP Portal portfolio. Illustrate what each option offers as well as its benefits. SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.4 – On Premises The SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.4 is SAP’s flagship portal product, based on the SAP NetWeaver Java stack, it has been in the market for 12 years and has thousands of productive customer and millions of users. The 7.4 version is the latest version, released in early 2013 is the first to offer customers the option to run their NetWeaver stack (and consequently the portal) on a HANA database. The NetWeaver Portal enables customers to build large scale intranet and extranet sites, bringing together applications (from SAP and nonSAP), documents, reports, business processes and people. SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.4 - On HANA Enterprise Cloud SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (SAP HEC) is a new offering that gives customers the full power of SAP HANA in a managed cloud environment (hosted by SAP) so that they don’t have to implement it on-site. It has been expanded beyond the “pure” HANA scenarios to enable NetWeaver scenarios which run on HANA. HEC is Ideal for mission-critical applications such as SAP Business Suite and SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse scenarios, both of which have strong relationship to the SAP NetWeaver Portal. For new customers looking to deploy portal or for existing NetWeaver Portal customers with a “cloud first” / “cloud only” policy, this is a highly recommended option. From a feature perspective, this is the same as the on premises SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.4. So the decision criteria in this case between the two offerings is based on managed vs. on premises (landscape) considerations only. Portal 7.4 on CAL SAP Cloud Appliance Library (SAP CAL) is an on-demand solution that enables SAP customers to quickly deploy demo, test, and training systems in the cloud. SAP CAL is powered by SAP HANA Cloud. It delivers SAP Business Suite content as software appliances directly into the Amazon Cloud accounts of existing Business Suite customers. SAP has created a version of the SAP NetWeaver Portal which can be 3
  4. 4. SAP PORTAL PORTFOLIO DEPLOYMENT OPTIONS provisioned through CAL. This version is based on SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.4 SP2 running on MaxDB. It can be purchased by customers via the SAP Store. Full details are available here. From a positioning point of view, this option is for non-productive use – meaning that customers are encouraged to use it for their development, testing and training needs, but it is not something which can be used as a productive portal instance. SAP HANA Cloud Portal The SAP HANA Cloud Portal (CP) has been released to market at the end of 2012 and is a product built from the ground up to support creation of mobile-ready web sites with superior user interface and connectivity to the on premises SAP Landscape. It is one of the first true pPaaS (Portal Platform as a 1 Service) offerings in the market, according to Gartner . CP is powered by the SAP HANA Cloud Platform (HCP) which is a full blown platform as a service (PaaS) solution. It has two categories of scenarios: Portal Platform as a Service: A group of cloud based UI services and widgets enabling customers to create a unique customized user experience o Pure cloud scenarios: expose cloud apps build with SAP HANA Cloud Platform o Hybrid scenarios: Extending on premise scenarios (expose data via Cloud Connector, build UI with HTML5 in the cloud) Cloud Portal for Solution Extensions: Leverage portal services for extending and enriching on premise and cloud solutions with contextual content and services. o SAP Cloud for Service – Self-Service Support Site o SuccessFactors Employee Central - Extensions It is important to note that CP is a completely different code line from the SAP NetWeaver Portal – there is zero overlap between them from a code perspective (in the same manner that the HANA Cloud Platform doesn’t have any common code with the on premise NetWeaver Java platform). CHOOSING BETWEEN PAIRS While it may seem that there are many different options, in reality there are two decisions points. The following section tries to highlight the key criteria for choosing between them. NetWeaver 7.4 Portal vs. HANA Cloud Portal As mentioned before, the HANA Cloud Portal (CP) is a new product and as such, is still evolving and 2 maturing to meet NetWeaver Portal (EP ) from a feature perspective as well as from an ecosystem for 3 partner products and pre-configured content from SAP (Business Packages ). The qualifying questions a customer needs to examine are as following:  B2E vs. B2B/B2C – While it possible to serve all scenarios with both products, CP is targeted more at external facing scenarios (B2B/B2C) – as is its pricing method (consumption vs. user based). The recommendation is therefor to use CP for external facing portal scenarios.  Competency – For a customer with a strong EP team, building an additional EP instance / site is a different task than a customer with no EP knowledge. In general – the learning curve for CP should be lower than one for EP  Complexity of Role Structure – EP supports a very complex role structure, built from years of experience running complex business applications in multiple industry scenarios. It also supports direct upload of roles from the ABAP based backend system (PFCG). As opposed to that – CP has a very rudimentary role structure at this point, adapted to the simple scenarios it is intended to tackle. For projects where an elaborate, complex role schema is required, EP should be considered first.  Out of the box SAP Content – As mentioned before, EP supports many different business packages, all of which are based on On premises SAP Software (ERP, CRM, etc.) as well as integration to on premises partner products. CP currently supports out of the box integration with SAP cloud solutions: Cloud for Service (Support Site) and SuccessFactors’ Employee Central. 1 “SAP HANA Cloud Portal is a Front End for SAP Innovation”, Gartner, 2013 EP – Enterprise Portal 3 For a full list of the SAP Portal Business Packages, See here 2 4
  5. 5. SAP PORTAL PORTFOLIO DEPLOYMENT OPTIONS  Update Cadence – Like all of SAP’s on premise software EP is updated with a major release approximately every 18 months with Enhancement Packs (EhP) and Service Packs (SP) 3-4 times a year. CP is updated on a monthly and sometimes even bi-weekly basis. Although the changes should be non-disruptive to the customer, this may have an impact on customer’s considerations in choosing between the two. NetWeaver 7.4 Portal – On Premises vs. HEC As outlined above, the NetWeaver 7.4 Portal is the base product for both the Hosted (HEC based) and On premise version. Choosing between the two is then done not on a feature comparison basis, but rather on an IT management and landscape based decision. The following qualifying questions should be examined:  TCO / Cost of Hardware – This is naturally one of the first and foremost considerations a customer would choose a cloud/managed deployment vs. an on premises one. As Hardware keeps getting outdated and needs to be maintained and replaced – removing not only the cost of the actual Hardware but also the associated costs with maintaining it can be an important driver towards leveraging Portal on HEC.  Cloud Policy – For customers with concerns about where the infrastructure is hosted (e.g. High security organizations, etc.), cloud based options are irrelevant – either because of security concerns, regulatory issues or other considerations. Naturally, for these customers then on premises version of NetWeaver 7.4 Portal is the most applicable.  Integration with other systems - a lot of SAP customers use the SAP NetWeaver Portal not just as a UI aggregation hub or as an application portal / intranet, but also as a single point of contact serving also as the SSO certificate provider in complex or federated environments. Using a hosted portal when the rest of the landscape is on premises may induce some complexity and these scenarios still need to be evaluated. For detailed information on landscape considerations and recommendations, please visit the SAP Landscape Recommendations wiki page  Bandwidth / Internet availability – For locations with low bandwidth / high latency scenario, any cloud based scenario is becoming less appealing compared to an on premises one. While SAP has a network acceleration tool (AccAD – Accelerated Application Delivery), it is unclear at this point how applicable it would be for a scenario where the Portal is hosted on a managed system. DETAILED COMPARISON The following table deep dives into the main three deployment options SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.4 SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.4 on HEC SAP HANA Cloud Portal Approach On premises Managed Services Pure Cloud Description Proven, secure, mobile-ready enterprise-class user experience platform Best of both worlds: proven enterpriseclass portal + the simplicity of the cloud Modern, lean portal platform as a service (pPaaS) for fast time to value and increased business agility Official Name SAP NetWeaver Portal Portal on SAP Hana Enterprise Cloud SAP HANA Cloud Portal Release SAP NetWeaver 7.4 SP4 SAP NetWeaver 7.4 SP4 Cloud Portal 4 Monthly release Hosted on Customer’s on premise Enterprise-class managed cloud “SAP SAP HANA Cloud 4 The HANA Cloud Portal is released on a monthly (and sometime twice a month) release cycle without disruption. 5

These roadmap documents look at each product separately and are the official roadmap for each product. Please read the legal disclaimer which is part of the roadmap as it applies to the outlook information presented below. The following section gives a highlight of each product as well as guidance on the relationship between them. HANA Cloud Portal The HANA Cloud Portal roadmap has several driving themes – The first one is to continue extending SAP’s cloud offerings (SuccessFactors, Cloud for Customer and possibly also Ariba based scenarios). The second 7 8 theme is about continuing to evolve the portal related functionalities, such as better WCM and ECM capabilities, integration with form creation tools, etc. The last (but not least theme) is to evolve the HANA Cloud Portal towards tighter integration with the HANA Stack in order to start leveraging the benefits of having the portal being based on HANA. This includes basing as much of the underlying technical services 9 on the HANA XS Engine , enabling consumption of XS based applications (which we see as becoming a more and more wide-spread way to extend the SAP Cloud applications) as well as future advanced content discovery services based on HANA. NetWeaver Portal 7.4 10 The NetWeaver Portal 7.4 roadmap is focused on several themes as well. The first them is strengthening the mobile offering of the On premises portal, realizing that mobile is the most sought after delivery channel for existing customers. Enabling mobile consumption for the existing install base (approx. 7000 customers with more than 10,000 productive systems) is one of the key endeavors of this product. In alignment with the SAP mobile strategy, tighter integration with SAP Fiori, adding a “mobile portal app store” concept and enabling offline, secure usage from mobile devices (SMP Kapsel). The second major theme is the integration of SAP Cloud based applications into the portal. As more and more customers embrace cloud based applications (Such as SuccessFactors’ Employee Central or SAP JAM) the demand to integrate them seamlessly into the existing portal is growing. Last but not least is leveraging the benefits of SAP HANA underneath the portal beyond the value of just having a single stack deployment of your BW and NetWeaver boxes. This theme is where the deployment option of 7.4 on HEC might be more appealing to customers who would like to leverage the contextual discovery services mentioned above. Future relationship between On Premise & Cloud SAP does not, at this point, see the Cloud Portal as the replacement of the NetWeaver Portal. Therefore, we do not intend to enable the HANA Cloud Portal to mimic all the capabilities and features available in the NetWeaver Portal. Using Gartner terminology, the NetWeaver Portal is positioned as a UXP – full blown user experience platform, while the HANA Cloud portal is targeted as to be a Lean Portal. We see both coexisting in the future, each service several use-cases, with some (investable) overlap. 8. 8. SAP PORTAL PORTFOLIO DEPLOYMENT OPTIONS Portal is expected to become more and more entrenched in SAP’s cloud portfolio while both solutions will start to leverage more and more of the HANA capabilities as mentioned above.
