  2. 2. <ul><li>Welcome to E-learning on Recipe Writing. </li></ul><ul><li>The following are the instructions for your lesson today: </li></ul><ul><li>Go through the following Powerpoint slides to review some features of Recipe Writing. </li></ul><ul><li>Click on the link to view and edit your group writing. </li></ul><ul><li>Discuss with your group members on-line to finalise the writing and leaders to save a copy. </li></ul><ul><li>Write your reflections for this E-learning session. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Identify Text features and Language features in a recipe writing </li></ul><ul><li>Application of noun phrases, imperatives and quantifiers </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Three main parts </li></ul><ul><li>1) An introductory statement giving the aim or goal. </li></ul><ul><li>This may be </li></ul><ul><li>the title of the text </li></ul><ul><li>an introductory paragraph </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>2) Materials needed for completing the direction: </li></ul><ul><li>This may be </li></ul><ul><ul><li>a list </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>a paragraph </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>This step may be left out in some procedures. </li></ul></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>3) A sequence of steps in the correct order </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Numbers can be used to show first, second, third and so on. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The order is usually important. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Words as now, next and after this can be used. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The steps usually begin with a command such as add, stir, or push. </li></ul></ul>

Cut the chicken </li></ul><ul><li>Quantifiers – Some, many, few, much, all </li></ul><ul><li>E.g. Serve the chicken with some chilli sauce </li></ul>

A sample recipe: <ul><li>Recipe for Singapore’s Favourite Dish : Hainanese Chicken Rice </li></ul><ul><li>Ingredients: </li></ul><ul><li>rice medium-sized chicken </li></ul><ul><li>cinnamon pandan leaves (for stock and rice) </li></ul><ul><li>salt ginger – shredded fine </li></ul><ul><li>lettuce garlic – shredded fine (a few cloves) </li></ul><ul><li>Method </li></ul><ul><li>Cook the chicken in water with pandan leaves and salt to taste for 20-30 minutes, until tender. </li></ul><ul><li>Remove the chicken and let it cool. Keep the stock for rice. </li></ul><ul><li>Cut the chicken into slices with a chopper. </li></ul><ul><li>Fry the shredded ginger and garlic in oil for a few minutes until golden and fragrant. </li></ul><ul><li>Cook the rice in a rice cooker, together with the seasoning, chicken stock, cinnamon and pandan leaves. </li></ul><ul><li>Serve the rice on a plate with a chicken portion, together with some chilli sauce and salad vegetables, such as tomato and cucumber. </li></ul>
  12. 13. Your Task Imagine you are watching the cooking show and wanted to prepare a tuna salad dish. You decided to jot down how to prepare the dish into your recipe book. Write a recipe on how to prepare the tuna salad. You should refer to the given pictures on page 1 for your recipe. <ul><li>In your recipe, include the following information: </li></ul><ul><li>what dish you are preparing </li></ul><ul><li>what ingredients are needed for the dish </li></ul><ul><li>what ingredients are needed for the dressing </li></ul><ul><li>list the correct steps to be followed in the preparation </li></ul><ul><li>what important step must be noted during the preparation </li></ul>
  13. 14. <ul><li>Read through the important features of a recipe again. </li></ul><ul><li>Follow the order of information that must be included. </li></ul><ul><li>Structure the answers into grammatically sound sentences. </li></ul>
  14. 15. <ul><li>Having reviewed the features of Recipe writing, now it is your turn to go through your group writing to edit them as a group. </li></ul><ul><li>Open your group writing in Google Doc. </li></ul><ul><li>Go to forum to discuss with your friends about your group writing for 25 minutes. </li></ul><ul><li>Now, based on your forum discussions, you may edit your group writing for 25 minutes. </li></ul>
