The Setting Being part of a larger Collaborative Research Center (InPROMPT,, top research groups from Berlin, Dortmund and Magdeburg collaborate to design and improve processes in homogeneous catalysis of industrially relevant reactions. The Max-Planck-Institute is world class research institution at the interface of chemistry, biology and engineering. The MSD group ( is applying and developing computational tools and techniques to elucidate structures and mechanisms of complicated chemical and biological systems. Pre-requisites We are looking for a PhD candidate with a strong background in computational chemistry and physical chemistry. He/she should be familiar with quantum chemical algorithms and tools, have knowledge of programming languages (such as C, C++, python and other scripting tools) and be open to interdisciplinary research. The Project The project involves the elucidation of complex reaction mechanisms in different solvents with designed properties. A use of QM, QM/MM plus solvent modeling methods will be applied and developed. Microkinetic transition state theory will be used and benchmarked with macrokinetics from strong experimental collaborators.
