  • WelcomeXen – from mature to adolescent [Benjamin Buttons]XenSummit @ Citrix to: thank you, show support & learn to be better stewardCitrix & virtualization – long time + holistic view about physical & logical2007: Aha moment to XenSource deal – investors question value @ $500MTransformation of CitrixPeople & team – amazing scientists, engineers and thought leadersOpen source – see the power of OSS and community first handCore technology – at server, desktop, client and cloudCitrix & xen going forward: Accelerate the commercial use of xenContribute as a solid OSS memberSteward xen.org to new levelAccelerate the commercial use of xen@ desktop – xen is core component of XD – now over 6M sold@server – xen is on 12% of new servers virtualized – going north@network – xen is in SDX virtualized network appliance – new category of service delivery controllers@client – xen will be on over 45M potential laptops@cloud – xen continue to reign in the cloud as #1 hypervisor – JackofallClouds study & our plan for CloudStackContribute as a solid OSS member (need your input here)Steward xen.org to new level (need your input here)Vision for xen: ubiquitous from client to cloud… from low-power devices to high-performance CPUs – a bare metal innovation platform – greater use cases in the post-PC era where services slide on/off/over hardware platforms – enabled by xenVision for xen = Ian Pratt – “Primary Investigator” on XenoServers project at Univ of CambridgeThank you Ian – poster & helicopter
  • Xenos generally refers to the variety of what a particular individual can be, specifically guest, host, stranger, friend, and, as previously mentioned, foreigner.Xenos can be used to refer to guest-friends whose relationship is constructed under the ritual of xenia ("guest-friendship").
  • Citrix & virtualization – long time + holistic view about physical & logical
  • @desktop – xen is core component of XD – now over 6M sold@server – xen is on 12% of new servers virtualized – going north@network – xen is in SDX virtualized network appliance – new category of service delivery controllers@client – xen will be on over 45M potential laptops@cloud – xen continue to reign in the cloud as #1 hypervisor – JackofallClouds study & our plan for CloudStack
  • Citrix has a team of 6 engineers full-time assigned to open source Xen and another 2 non engineers working on community (including me)On top of this 10-15% of XenServer team engineering capacity is dedicated to open source Xen (that varies depending on what is currently worked on)Not quite sure what the exact figures are, but we have almost 20 people in some form working on Xen projects and more if we include some of the openstack activitiesA recent example where Citrix discovered an opportunity is Project Kronos : 4 people are working on this (up from 0.5 3 months ago)We lead two out of three of the active Xen projects
  • Focus on new projects that allow the community to exploit new opportunities (e.g. project Kronos will help capitalize on openstack momentum)Fair and transparent governance (e.g. recent changes to Xen open source covernance) which gives ALL contributors the same opportunitiesGo beyond the developer community : reconnect to users by building user outreach program going to more eveLooking at revamping the website and infrastructureAnd we are looking for input whether we are following the right priorities
  • ubiquitous from client to cloud… from low-power devices to high-performance CPUs – a bare metal innovation platform – greater use cases in the post-PC era where services slide on/off/over hardware platforms – enabled by xen
  • Ian Pratt is the principal investigator for the project.XenoServer is a server that can safely execute foreign, potentially untrusted code. The XenoServer platform is a network of XenoServers meant to support distributed code execution services.TheXenoServer project is currently in development, and is a collaboration between Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and Cambridge University.theXenoServer project is implemented using the Xen VMM.
  • Xenos generally refers to the variety of what a particular individual can be, specifically guest, host, stranger, friend, and, as previously mentioned, foreigner.
  • A few short years ago, Xen was a piece of paper with some big, radical ideas in it… today, it’s literally changed the world. The cloud wouldn’t exist today if weren’t for Xen. Making the connection from that paper… to what it’s become today.. and signed by all the “guest-friends” who helped make Ian’s vision a reality… feels like a great chord to strike, and a great way to kick off the conference.
