Its prevalence equals that of asthma and diabetes combined. Rheumatoid arthritis affects 2.1 million Americans, mostly women. Asthma affects an estimated 14.6 million American adults, has an overall lifetime prevalence of 10.5%, and affects women more than men. Diabetes affects 17 million Americans, or 6.2% of the population. Osteoarthritis affects 20.7 million Americans and women more than men.
