  • the value of software assetscan be viewed from three perspectives, namely production, exchange, and value of use. The value of use issometimes called business value and is a typical ingredientin the business case for software investments.Under the use perspective of value, an asset derives itsvalue from its current or future use, i.e. from the benefitsthat its owner can generate by its exploitationUnder the exchange perspective of value, an asset derivesits value from the price that emerges from supply anddemand on a competitive market place. ThisUnder the production perspective of value, asset valueis determined by the costs to produce it. Production costtypically is composed of material costs (the bricks andmortar for a house) and labour costs (the work of turningbricks and mortar into a house). For software assets, materialcosts correspond to licenses of third-party components thatare used in the development of the software. Labour costscorrespond to the effort of architects, programmers, testers, etc. to design, build, configure, test, and deploy the software.
