Mothers in Genesis and Exodus - Presentation Transcript

    1. Mothers in Genesis and Exodus Rev. Samuel Robles Jr., M.Div May 10, 2009
    2. 3 mothers
      • This morning, we’ll be exploring 3 mothers found in the first two books of the Bible: Genesis and Exodus.
      • These examples of motherhood can be viewed as a lens towards today’s reality, and can even be examples of both what to do and what not to do.
      • This lesson is not exclusive to women. The morals/values of the lesson can be applicable to men.
    3. Eve
      • The first mother.
        • Genesis 4: 1-2
      • People can be real quick to blame her for what happened in the garden.
      • BUT, let’s explore some possible, unspoken areas of her life.
    4. Eve
      • Eve didn’t have “girls night out” as a support group or to go to for advice.
      • In fact, she didn’t even have a mother to go to for advice and to hear some past experiences that may have been helpful towards her decision making.
      • There were no other mothers around when her kids were sick, or constantly crying. She had to figure things out on her own.
    5. Eve
      • Her son, Cain, killed her other son, Abel. (the first homicide)
        • Genesis 4:8
      • She was the first mother to bury her son.
      • She then gave birth to Seth.
        • Genesis 4:25
    6. Eve
      • At times it can be lonely, especially when you feel that you need some help the most, but God is merciful and is with you.
    7. Sarah
      • Married to Abraham.
      • God made a covenant with Abram.
        • Genesis 15
      • Sarah took matters into her own hands.
        • Genesis 16: 1-2
      • Abraham laughed at God.
        • Genesis 17: 15-19
      • Sarah started laughing too!
        • Genesis 18: 10-12
    8. Sarah
      • God wasn’t joking.
        • Genesis 18:13-15
      • God kept His promise.
        • Genesis 21: 1-7
    9. Sarah
      • Circumstances can lead us to doubt many times, but “is there anything too hard for the Lord?”
    10. Jochebed
      • Who’s Jochebed?
      • Mother of Moses
        • Exodus 6:20; Numbers 26:59
      • The birth of Moses
        • Exodus 2: 1-10
      • Moses is called by God
        • Exodus 3: 7-10
    11. Jochebed
      • Sacrifice is a part of motherhood, and its results could be a blessing and miraculous.
    12. Mothers are a gift!
