    • 5. G l o b a l s h i f t <ul><li>Like their predecessor Pharaoh, the hard-line members of the Soviet Politburo had no intention of acknowledging God’s power or authority. Thus, in the waning days of 1980, a veritable plague descended upon the Kremlin. </li></ul><ul><li>Beginning with the death of Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin the week before Christmas, top Communist Party officials soon became something of an endangered species. </li></ul><ul><li>Next on the list was long-time Party boss Leonid Brezhnev, who died in November 1982. </li></ul>

G l o b a l s h i f t <ul><li>Two months later, he was followed to the grave by Soviet President Nikolai Podgorny. </li></ul><ul><li>When the Kremlin old guard persisted in their deceit, atheism and repression, the shadow of death returned to Moscow in February 1984, claiming the life of Party Chairman and former KGB head Yuri Andropov. </li></ul><ul><li>In December, it enveloped hard-line Defense Minister and Politburo member Demitri Ustinov. </li></ul>

G l o b a l s h i f t <ul><li>The Politburo’s stubbornness was eventually broken when, three months later after the death of Ustinov, yet another Party chairman, Konstantin Chernenko, gave up the ghost. </li></ul><ul><li>Embarassed by the perpetual parade of state funerals, the ruling hierarchy tapped a relative newcomer, Mikhail Gorbachev, to lead the country. </li></ul><ul><li>With that, the dying stopped. </li></ul><ul><li>Now that God finally had His man, the Angel of Death was invited to sheath his well-worn sword.” </li></ul><ul><li>George Otis, Jr. </li></ul>
