    • Bioinformatics Programming Challenge - BPC 2013 • Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) are stretches of DNA containing or linked to the genes that underlie a quantitative trait. • Quantitative traits refer to phenotypes (characteristics) that vary in degree and can be attributed to polygenic effects, i.e., product of two or more genes, and their environment. • Challenge: Find the species for which most QTLs are known by generating a comprehensive list of QTLs for all nonhuman chordata.
    • Bioinformatics Programming Challenge - BPC 2013 • Each entry in the list should contain the: – – – – species locus as chromosome/position OR actual sequence trait reference (pubmed, db_xref, …) linking the locus to the trait • The winner will be the one with the longest list of QTLs and/or the one identifying the species for which most QTLs are known. • Lists can be send as a flat CSV file to wim.vancriekinge@ugent.be before 1st december 2013 • Jury: Wim Van Criekinge, Kristiaan Van Hercke • Decision: 10th december2013 • Price: eternal fame, WWW webhosting, iDevice, participate in entrepreneurial follow up
