Ea in two posters Ea in two posters Presentation Transcript

  • EA in two posters John Chi-Zong Wu peaitce@yahoo.com
  •  Propose a two poster EA approach.  An intuitive EA suitable to these different audiences and the value proposition for each of them.  The benefit of Enterprise Map  The benefit of Master Plan.  “How to” is out scope of this presentation. Presentation Goal
  •  EA can be as simple as two posters for all levels of stakeholders to comprehend.  The posters illustrate “What is the Enterprise?” from the aspect of why (Value Chain), what (Business Capability), how (Concept of operation), who (Organization), where (Location) and when (Workload).  The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The combination of common information become sensitive enterprise material.  It also illustrate the automation and information landscape in the context of enterprise definition.  In addition, It also illustrate internal and external connectivity.  The Enterprise map illustrate the enterprise environment.  The master plan illustrate the target architecture . The purpose of Two Poster EA
  •  EA for all level of stakeholers.  Hard copy posters serve well for human cognition.  Although technology have evolved rapidly, human cognition capability is the same for many thousands of years.  EA artifacts are locked in repository, heavy volumes of documents in the dark.  Stealth EA have no value. Why EA posters ?
  •  The two page EA takes less than 20% of EA effort. However under the 80/20 rule:  80% of people use the 20% of EA.  20% of EA effort deliver 80% EA value.  The 80% of people are the business community.  The 20% of people are the engineering and developers. 80% of stakeholders use 20% of EA
  • Enterprise Map
  •  EA is a matter between Atomism and Holism rather than IT and business.  Nineteenth-century science went wrong mostly because of the hard and narrow concept of causation which dominated it.  EA is the effort to incorporate holistic inspiration to the atomism dominate architecture world. Incorporate holistic inspiration
  •  “Enterprise” is invisible for no one to see.  Enterprise Map enable every one to see the whole from the aspect of why, what, how, who, where and when. The whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.  Most of people mistaken the parts the have touched as the whole.  Enterprise Map enable every one to see the true whole via collaborative effort and consensus.  Enterprise map see the as-is environment.  Enterprise map consist of automation and information landscape in business context. Enterprise Map to see the whole
  •  In the past, Enterprise architect have focused on technologies and acting as redundantly as the solution architects.  They expect to see application, data and IT infrastructure in EA.  EA is an emerging paradigm to architect the enterprise.  It is the orderly arrangement of business capabilities, organizations, locations, workload, application and information landscape.  The subject of EA is the enterprise not the technologies. EA to architect the enterprise
  •  Holistic and whole are abstractive concept and complicate to explain.  Holistic concern about a function whole which can be large or small as described in macrocosm and microcosm.  “Enterprise” means a functional whole.  To keep holistic concept simple, EA take a practical holistic approach by considering an subject from the holistic aspect of why, what, how, who, where and when as described in the Zachman framework. Holistic from the aspect of 1H and 5W
  • The Enterprise Map Specification Location Map Value Chain Concept of operation Business Capability Map ConnectivityInformation Landscape Work Load Title Block & legend Customer Title BlockLegend  The specification enable a repeatable method for purpose of training .  D size drawing (36” X 24”) to post on the wall.  Reduce to C size drawing set for desktop use. Organization
  •  Enterprise map apply the principle of the whole is much greater than the sum of its part.  A piece of common information may not be significant, however, it can become sensitive information by putting the pieces together.  In atomistic culture, value chain, concept of operation, business capability, location maps, organization chart, workload are the unrelated common information.  Enterprise map put all the pieces information on one page to render the unseen enterprise. The whole is greater than sum of parts
  •  Enterprise map is inclusive, it is not a pie on the sky.  The criteria of Enterprise Map is that, every one can find a their image in the enterprise.  Without the enterprise map, the staff members have focused on their part.  The map enable the enterprise to share and reuse from each other. Every one as part of enterprise
  •  Enterprise Map serve well as an orientation tool for all level of new staff members  New staff member spend significant time to know the organization.  With the enterprise maps, it takes only a few day to new staff members to be productive.  Enterprise map enable the old staff to see the whole. Many staff have worked in their area for many years without the enterprise big picture. Enterprise Map for orientation
  •  Enterprise map serve well a mnemonic device for memory retention.  Long time staff members have encountered overwhelming explosion of institutional knowledge, the enterprise map serve well as mnemonic device to retrieve old memory.  Looking at an enterprise map, a person can easily tell a long time forgotten story. Enterprise Map as a mnemonic device
  •  Enterprise Map is a collaborative effort. It include:  The knowledge we know.  The knowledge we know we do not know.  The knowledge we do not know we do not know.  Enterprise Map is established via collaborative effort.  On the other hand, it is facilitate the enterprise collaborative culture. Enterprise Map to facilitate collaboration
  • Master Plan
  • Master plan analogy to city plan  Master plan is analogy to a city plan.  Enterprise map allow every one to see the whole and aware of existing environment.  Master Plan, analogy to a city plan, plans for the future.  Master plan is the target and guiding principle for the enterprise.
  • Prepare Master plan from Enterprise Map  Enterprise Map does not only describe the existing environment, It can also used to plan for the future.  Use Enterprise map as the based to plan for future as the master plan.  Business reengineering.  Business reorganization. Organization consolidation.  Location consolidation.  Information consolidation.  Automation consolidation.  Further discussion in the presentation of Master Plan
  •  Reorganization is the corporate management term for the act of reorganizing the legal, ownership, operational, or other structures of a company for the purpose of making it more profitable, or better organized for its present needs.  Most business reorganization are conducted as an art.  Business reorganization should be conducted systematic approach from the aspect of business capability, workload, business operation and business location.  Master plan lead enterprise reorganization from a holistic approach. Use MP for business reorganization
  •  The major challenge of enterprise is the gaps between strategy instead of lack of sound strategy.  Gap between strategy and execution due to lack of understanding on the strategy.  Chain of command can be very missleading.  Master plan on an intuitive page become an institutional knowledge  Every one can comprehend the enterprise vision and strategy to close the gaps between strategy and execution. US MP to bridge strategy and execution
  • Use MP to prepare heat map  A heat map is an information visualization technique that uses color to represent attributes of information in a two-dimensional image.  Master plan can be used to prepare heat map .  The heat map is used to support strategic planning on closing the business performance gaps due to constant change in the organic enterprise.
  •  Enterprise Map illustrate the coherence customer’s need, value chain, business capabilities, organization chart, location, information and workload.  Business capability satisfy to customer’s need.  Business capabilities align to value chain.  Organization in coherence to business capabilities.  Information landscape derived from business capabilities.  Workload based on business capability.  Location in coherence to business workload.  Automation align to business capabilities. Use MP in seeking coherence
  • Simple for stakeholders but not for EAs
  •  The two poster EA approach is by no mean to say EA is simple.  It is simple for the stakeholders but not for the Enterprise Architects.  The challenge is how to package the complicate EA in a simple presentation to raise the attention on the value of EA. The Challenge
  •  EA is an emerging paradigm, the posters are only the tip of EA iceberg.  The two posters are the result of significant collaborative enterprise architecture effort.  The purpose is to lead the stakeholder to under water treasure of EA Posters are the tip of EA iceberg
  •  An enterprise can have many Two poster EA.  In holistic concept, a universe consist of many small universe and each one is a functional whole.  In a family, parents does not own their children, each one of them is a functional whole.  An enterprise does not only have “One EA”, each sub enterprise is a functional whole and reflect the same image as describe in Macrocosm and Microcosm.  In mechanical concept, there is only function whole and the rest of parts are not functional whole. An enterprise have multiple sets of posters
  • Conclusion  EA can be as simple for the stakeholders as two posters.  The two poster constitute the foundation of enterprise architecture .  80% of stakeholders only use 20% of EA artifact.  The posters are easy for the stakeholders but not easy to prepare.  EA is an emerging paradigm.  Enterprise Map is a collaborative work, Enterprise Architects serve as the “Glue” not the “Glue” .
