  • Welcome to the WTS webinar “Is Your iSeries Recoverable? On today’s webinar, we will cover topics related to iSeries disaster recovery including recovery planning, staffing, and best practices for IBM’s AS/400 solution.
  • My name is Ward Quarles I am Director of Marketing & Communications for WTS Thank you for joining us today. We appreciate the time you have devoted to this webinar and will use it wisely. Let’s get started.
  • What is a Disaster? Anything that stops your business from functioning and that cannot be corrected within an acceptable amount of time. Each organization will have to determine what situations might constitute a disaster.
  • What is a disaster? A disaster in the gulf states might be a hurricane.
  • What is a disaster? For other organizations, a disaster might be related to natural occurring weather events like tornado, severe storm, or an earthquake.
  • What is a disaster? For all of us, an information technology systems failure would be a disaster.
  • Reality is you know your organizations and what they would be risks in terms of a disaster. Natural disasters like Tornado, Flood, Hurricane, and Earthquake. Extended power outages associated with your electrical power supply. Operator error. Hardware or disk failures A malicious attack from inside or outside the organization. Planned maintenance gone wrong. FEMA has recorded over 1,938 major disasters since 1953. In 2010, FEMA recorded 70 weather related and emergency disasters in the United States. Are any of your companies at risk? Only you can decide what constitutes a disaster.
  • You may remember these important questions from our introductory email. Is your iSeries recoverable? Are you tasked with developing your recovery plan? Will your recovery plan include documented recovery procedures? Can you guarantee the availability of your internal staff during a disaster? What facilities and equipment will be used for your recovery in the event of a disaster?
  • Statistics tell us if we are like other companies. 12% of companies do not have a recovery solution or plan. 24% have a warm-site solution with companies like IBM or SunGard. Most have never completed a successful test with these organizations. 25% have an in-house, same site recovery solution.
  • A poor availability solution can only lead to other corporate issues including loss of business data, lengthy disruptions in your business including a lack of computer software solutions, internal conflict and chaos, and the potential loss of customers.
  • Is Your Organization Prepared for a Disaster?
  • Does your nightly backup guarantee a recovery? Most of our organizations use nightly backups to protect our data.
  • Be prepared! No one wants to be in a position of explaining why your organization could not recover from a disaster.
  • What are the iSeries market requirements for Disaster Recovery.
  • Our research when discussing DR with customers and prospects indicates that many iSeries customers have exposures that include: No documented Disaster Recovery plan or process No recovery facility Local tape storage Equipment constraints Human resource limitations Lack of enterprise applications expertise Loss of data (Recovery Point >12 hours) Lengthy recovery (Recovery Time >one week) No recent test to validate recovery ability
  • Common customer requirements for WTS perspective customers. Strongest need is to reduce risk and exposure. Reduce risk and exposure Proven and reliable disaster recovery solution Meet corporate disaster recovery objectives Meet budgetary requirements Scalable to meet future needs RTO and RPO assurance Successful, documented semi-annual testing Geographic diversity for recovery center
  • WTS provides a managed recovery service that improves Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) without a significant increase in cost compared to other 3 rd party providers.
  • Overview of the WTS Managed Recovery Solution
  • WTS’ Managed Disaster Recovery Service includes: Perform a backup & recovery assessment Perform a full recovery as part of assessment Provide recovery documentation Provide WTS equipment for a recovery Conduct with customer two full recovery tests first year Perform a full recovery in a disaster Establish network connectivity (VPN) Work with your internal and external auditors
  • The Backup & Recovery Program assessment will enable WTS to identify any current exposures, technical readiness, current iSeries and Intel compliance. The following areas will be reviewed and examined: Current backup strategy & policies for the iSeries Data. Current backup strategy & policies for the iSeries server infrastructure Critical server signoff Data loss exposure models Backup tape management rotations and off-site strategies. Disaster scenarios and existing exposures. Plan to achieve  recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO). Current backup tape management software controls and backup program implementation. Deliverables: Best Practices Backup & Recovery Assessment with recommendations Optimize backups to ensure optimal recoverability. Develop a customized restoration document for Customer server infrastructure. Document all iSeries server infrastructure.
  • Upon completion of the Backup & Recovery Assessment consulting engagement, WTS technical support staff will completely restore your enterprise server infrastructure.  This will validate the backup and program design and restoration documents. The client can determine how they would like to participate in this test — as a passive or active contributor.  The intent is to complete the test satisfactorily to meet  business requirements.  Upon completion client will have the following deliverables: A complete and tested set of documented recovery procedures for your server environment Timeline for complete Systems Recovery
  • Each year, our customers will perform a recovery test. This annual testing assures your organization that internal change management processes are supported in your recovery plan. The annual test includes: No cost testing Test period guaranteed within six weeks of the request. Internet access to the recovery site 24 hours of client access to the recovered systems Updated disaster recovery plan documentation
  • This chart compares the detailed deliverables between the WTS solution and other third party providers. Notice the
  • WTS guarantees your recoverability. We validate your backups to assure the recovery which is dependent on data and application availability. We provide your disaster recovery plan and support annual testing after the first year at no additional cost to your organization. We have over 20 years of AS/400 and iSeries experience for IBM Power I customers. We test and prove your Recovery Point and Recovery Time Objectives. Unlike other third party providers, there is no requirement for your staff to travel in the event of a disaster. WTS will have a detailed knowledge of your systems and software solutions to assure your organization of a successful recovery. If needed, WTS can also provide short term hosting solutions. This would be valuable and less costly if your datacenter is not inhabitable for an extended period of time.
  • In addition to the Managed Disaster Recovery services described in the proceeding slides, WTS can also support your organizations needs for: High Availability Data Replication for iSeries and Intel Data Vaulting Hardware Virtualization
  • Now that you understand our managed disaster recovery service, let me tell you more about your company. Our credentials include:
  • Our staff is led by Mr. Richard Dolewski, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Business Continuity Services. Richard is a systems integration specialist and certified disaster recovery planner. He is a frequent presenter ant COMMON and IBM conferences world wide. Richard’s most recent book is titled System I Disaster Recovery Planning. This book is available from MCPress and Amazon.com.
  • WTS has a iSeries knowledgeable staff dedicated to the recovery solutions for our customers. They are skilled AS/400 and Intel technicians that have supported 18 computer room disasters. We are conducting 2 tests per week for our existing disaster recovery and hosting customers. Our data center is staffed 24x7 and our facility and processes are SAS70 Type II compliant for those customers who have regulatory needs. Our team has established best practices for all iSeries customers.
  • In conclusion: Your goal is the continuation of business operations. It is not enough to only arrange for hardware replacement. Your planning must address equipment, staffing, and recovery skills. The task at hand is to educate executive management on existing vulnerabilities. Present solutions along with associated costs. We invite you to work with WTS on your disaster recovery options.
