    1. February 10, 2009 Someone once said that Black History Month is a bad idea. He said that African American history should be taught all year round. Other people I know say Black History Month forces us to pay some attention. Others ask what about Italian American history month. What do you think?
    2. Black History Month
      • Project
      • Due Monday the 16 th
      • Your choice of a 2 page paper or a poster
      • If you want I will assign you a topic
      • Worth 2 quiz grades
      • Will be displayed in the classroom and in the hall
    3. Homework
      • Would you want to join a Union? Do you think Unions are a good idea? 1 paragraph minimum.
    4. Black History Month
      • Idea of Carter G. Woodson
      • Started as Negro History Week in 1926
      • Woodson chose February because it is the birth month of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass
    5. Suffrage
      • It means the right to vote
      • Remember not everyone had the right to vote
      • Women were usually the last to get the right to vote
      • Usually suffrage was extended out of fear of a revolution
    6. Adam Snith
      • Wrote the book The Wealth of Nations
      • It is still read today
      • Help make economics a science
      • Argued that the best thing a government could do about the economy was nothing
    7. Socialism
      • State or collective ownership of the means of production
      • Supposed to grant equal opportunity for all
      • Most of the revolutionaries of the 1800s were socialist to some degree
    8. Karl Marx
      • German
      • Wrote the Communist Manifesto
      • Political thinker
      • “ Workers of the world Unite!”
      • Believed people were more loyal to their class than their country
    9. Utopianism
      • The idea that there could be a perfect society
      • Often these societies were religious
      • Utopia is impossible as it would mean a society that cannot ever change
      • Many groups tried anyway
