Africa is More Than Stereotypes
1. September 6, 2011 When you think of Africa, what are the first things you think of? Make a list. Then, complete the following sentence: “Africa is…”
2. Objective: Today you will learn what goes into making your grade You will demonstrate you learned this by completing the exit ticket
3. The Do - Now Worth 10 % of your grade That is a full letter grade – you can go from a B to a C very easily if you refuse to complete the Do - Now
4. The Do - Now Will be checked daily, by me How? I will watch you and see if you are completing it Repeated refusal to do the do now will result in a call home The time for the do now is the first 5 minutes of class. Late? No credit
5. Homework: Make sure you have what you need for this class What do you need? A notebook, that you must replace when full of notes, something to write with and a folder to keep papers in
6. Homework: Worth another 10 % of your grade. Refuse to do the homework and you will drop a full letter grade That means a B becomes a C
7. Homework: Is frequent but generally easy You will usually have a small assignment every day Fridays you will see the dancing frog, and that will mean no homework
8. Vocabulary: There will be a word of the day The word will be explained and then you will write it in your notebook Then, you will use that word in a sentence
9. Notebook: Put the current date on the top of EVERY page Write the do now in your notebook Write the vocabulary sentence Take notes as needed / requested
10. Notebook: Will be checked informally on an ongoing basis Will be checked formally at regular intervals Notebooks count for the do now, and for class participation Keep your notebooks in order many quizzes are open notes
11. Test / Quiz / Projects 25% of your grade Class work sometimes will count as a project Quizzes will sometimes be homework Each assignment will receive a point value The % of the points you earn is your grade for this
12. P.R.O.U.D. Did the whole class demonstrate P.R.O.U.D. on a daily basis? This will be 5% of your grade Don’t argue with me, argue with the people causing us not to be P.R.O.U.D.
13. Participation: Will be the remaining 50% of your grade Cutting class, sleeping, eating, talking, disrespect – all can and will impact your participation grade
14. Participation: Means you cannot claim “I do all my work” if you are not here, on time, with something to write with and something to write on, and focused on the learning!
15. Class work: There are five things that go into your grade List them by percentage Put the largest at the top and the smallest at the bottom Put the percentage by the name EXAMPLE – P.R.O.U.D 5%
16. EXIT TICKET: Will count as part of your participation It doesn’t need to be right, it needs to be completed – why? Because this is how I know that you get it
17. Exit Ticket: For today, your class work and exit ticket will be identical Write the class work on a blank piece of paper and turn it in
