  • 3. Vocabulary: Auction The items were sold at auction Bids were accepted, with a minimum raise of five dollars Bids started at fifty dollars

  • 5. Slave auctions: Large numbers of slaves were sold at auction An opening offer (bid) would be made Like betting in poker, the amount of money keeps rising

  • 9. Sample: My guide suggested visiting a slave auction. He said I’d never seen anything like it, and that the colorful spectacle was sure to interest me. He was wrong. I came away feeling depressed. These people don’t understand what they do to themselves, let alone those they sell. I think it is the sound I will remember the most. The clanking of the chains and the soft cries of the people as they were separated from their friends – these things I will not forget
