  • Templates – use a standard template for formatting settings that you want to apply consistently across several reports. The following notes should be considered: Applying a template on top of an existing report can be disruptive the destination report and change it dramatically. It is advised to apply the template before the new report has been built. If applicable, automatically apply the same template every time you create a new document via TOOLS / OPTIONS / NEW DOCUMENT / REPORT LAYOUT / USE A DEFAULT TEMPLATE When INSERT REPORT is used, it is not formatted automatically with a specific template, you have to explicitly use FORMAT / REPORT / APPLY TEMPLATE The default.ret template is the common template used and it is the most likely to be over-written when a new installation of Business Objects takes place. Either publish the source ‘default.rep’ document to corporate documents, keep a local copy or change the name and refer to the template by this new name Templates only control how existing report elements will look directly after the template is applied. New report elements take on the formatting of ‘standard report styles’ discussed elsewhere. It is possible for the application of a template to cause existing report elements to disappear e.g. if the template has one table but the existing report has 3, then only one will survive the application of the template. Using templates You can use a template in the following situations: • When creating a report. The New Report Wizard includes a dialog box that enables you to view and select the template you want to use. The styles and structure of the template are applied to the new report. • When formatting an existing report. When you apply a template you can click to apply the template styles only, or to apply the styles and the structure. If you click to apply the styles and the structure, you can also manually replace certain variables in the template with certain variables from the report.   Note: Universe Designers can apply formats (Alignment, Font, Border, Shading) to objects when creating universes. These formats are used even if you use a template with different formats. If you are designing templates, we recommend that you talk to your universe designer to make sure you are using the same formats.

If Replace Variables is not selected you must define them by clicking Define, which opens the Replace Variables dialog box.
