Civil War Weapons and Technology - Presentation Transcript

  1. Civil War Weapons and Technology
    • One of the more popular Civil War weapons that were used at the time were the Gatling Gun. The gun was used during the Civil War. It was hand operated. The gun had 6 barrels in the gun and each barrel fired 100 barrels per minute.Unfortunately the gun had many problems. The problems were mostly from accuracy and velocity.
  2. The Sloop of War
    • The Sloop was a fore-and-aft rigged boat with one mast and a single jib
    • It had a support leading from the bow to the masthead.
    • A sloop of war was a small warship was also, variously rigged as a ship, that carried fewer than 18 guns in the British navy and fewer than 24 in the American navy.
  3. The Merrimac
    • Early in the war, the Union forces left a Virgina port.
    • When they left, they left behind a warship called the Merrimac.
    • When the Confederacy started the war, they didn’t have a navy. So they took the Merrimac and covered it with iron and added a powerful ram.
    • In 1862, the Merrimac was renamed the Virginia
  4. The Monitor
    • Then response to what the Confederacy had done the Union Navy built their own ship called the Monitor.
    • The Monitor had a flat deck and two powerful guns.
  5. The Merrimac and Monitor
    • The Virginia was confronted by the Monitor
    • They both fired at eachother.
    • Neither one won
    • After the war, the Union and the Confederates both added iron ships to their navies.
