NOVA's OER-based General Education project created a series of courses using OER instead of expensive textbooks. The courses currently can lead to a General Education Certificate. A second series of OER courses are currently under development that will allow students an option to complete an AS degree in General Studies without having to purchase textbooks.

Goals of This Project        Offer 12 OER GenEd courses fall 2013 (Phase 1); Courses can be taken individually or as a GenEd Certificate; Offer 10 additional OER GenEd courses fall 2014 (Phase 2); Courses will complete OER track for AS degree program; Create greater awareness of OER at NOVA and beyond; Help faculty identify existing OER and/or create new OER course content to improve teaching and learning; Make education more accessible and affordable for all learners at NOVA and throughout the VCCS by doing away with the requirement for community college students to purchase and depend on expensive textbooks for success in these gateway courses. http://www.flickr.com/photos/uafcde/1817132666

Courses Selected (Phase 1) We selected high-impact courses for a broad population        English – ENG 111, 112,125 Math – MTH 151 Science – PHY 201, 202 History – HIS 121, 122 Humanities/Fine Arts – ART 101, 102 Social/Behavioral Sciences – HIS 262 Student Development – SDV 100 These courses can be completed as an entire certificate program or individually http://www.flickr.com/photos/43602175@N06/4070018828

Faculty Commitment The faculty participating in the OER project were carefully selected based on:    A history of providing high quality and innovative instruction; A clear understanding and application of sound online teaching pedagogy; And demonstrated knowledge of and prior use of some open course content. http://openclipart.org/detail/6970/reference-desk-by-stevelambert-6970
  • 5. Project Resources    Faculty are provided grant funded stipends to redesign a course using OER instead of traditional textbooks. ELI resources (Librarians, Instructional Designers) are provided to assist in course design and development, and OER curation. All course material developed for this project will be shared throughout the VCCS and licensed through Creative Commons after the pilot.
  • 6. Team Designed Course Approach Administrative leadership and advocacy  Faculty are the course content experts  Instructional Designers are content delivery experts  ELI Librarian is OER course material expert 
  • 7. OER Content Development Faculty work with ELI Instructional Designers to create engaging course materials and learning assessments using high Quality OER.
  • 8. Online Tools and Resources Librarian curated and maintained OER Professional Development course site for faculty to help them to identify and utilize appropriate free and open course materials.

  • 10. Significant Cost Savings  A student completing the entire OER-Based Gen Ed Certificate would potentially save $1845 over the cost of new textbooks in the traditional textbook-based courses.  The estimated savings to students enrolled in the fall OER pilot courses is in excess of $140,000!
  • 11. Anticipated Outcomes These courses will be more affordable and accessible to community college students.  Students will save thousands of dollars and all students will have equal access to all OER course materials.  Student Success rates will improve.  Student demand for these courses will help drive future OER course development leading to a full OER-based AS degree.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/sepblog/3941048713/
  • 12. Early Student Success Data ART 101 increased 21%  ART 102 increased 6%  ENG 112 decreased 2%  ENG 125 decreased 9%  HIS 121 increased 37%  HIS 122 increased 44%  MTH 151 remained the same  SDV 100 increased 14% 
  • 13. Moving Forward Review Phase 1 OER courses that did not show improved student success and make necessary content revisions;  Continue with Phase 2 development of OER courses to complete optional OER track to complete full AS Gen Ed degree;  Partner with other academic departments at NOVA and partner institutions to create additional OER certificate and degree program 
