How do you quit being a victim to every slick telemarketer out there? Is there anyway to see a scam and get out of their way?

I've been there and done that.

There are reasons people have been trained into being dupes. And all these reasons can be un-trained as well - if you know how.
I wrote this book based on the research I did to dig myself out of the hole I had been scammed into.

I decided not to get mad or get even – just get my money back somehow, write up what I had encountered, and then move on. And writing this book is part of moving on.

While I've put the bulk of this data into several blogs, ebooks, presentations, papers, and so on, I've decided to cobble it all together into a single book so that people can get this data without having to go through what I did.

Our job here is not just getting our own lives free from scammers and rip off artists, but it’s making this planet we live on a bit safer place for everyone else.

This pre-release mini-version of the book is made available so you can get started creating your own freedom.

  • 6. Get Yourself Scam Free Introduction I wrote this book based on the research I did to dig myself out of the hole I had been scammed into. After I've done what is probably thousands of hours of research, my view on this was distilled one night, waking up after long hours editing and researching links and references on scammers. This is the post I wrote early the next morning: Remember Pinocchio when he visited that island and just escaped being turned into a donkey? Well, that’s the same chance we have with our efforts to stop scammers by getting people to simply wise up. All that free beer and pool is just the temptation - much like Pinocchio and his friends. Skip school and have some fun, said the fox and his cat-buddy. The fox got paid for delivering boys to the coach driver. That’s our telemarketer. That set-up on the island with all that free beer and pool - that’s the sales floor and product fulfillment. What happens to our hero/heroine? They slave away in the mines 1
  • 7. Dr. Robert C. Worstell for the rest of their lives paying off the debt they just racked up. Nothing in this universe is free, after all. What’s in that beer? It’s the idea we’ve all been sold on that you can “get rich quick” and leverage your easy credit to start making 6-figure incomes overnight. It only keeps us working in the mines - same as it always has. But how about we wake them up - like Pinocchio? What if they just quit drinking the beer (Kool-Aid) for just a little while and see the people around them sprouting tails and ears? The part of the story you don’t see is where they get enough people in the village missing their kids and complaining about this guy with the stage coach and the mines - that the authorities crack down on him and find some technicality to take away his coach license. Sure, he just finds some other business to go into, but that island shuts down because there is no one paying for it any more. No one to work the mines means no one to pay for the mining. And that’s a close approximation to what happens as people start complaining like hell about the scams they encounter. Here's an idea: while a lot of people besides myself have said to complain like hell to all the authorities they can – what if they also started helping other people to not get scammed to begin with? They just simply help people wise up about what they are doing online and on their telephone. People don't have to give away their telephone numbers or credit card numbers. They don't even have to use credit cards at all. People don't have to be victims. But they can go ahead fall for any scam they like - if that's what they choose to. The idea is to give them the choice. 2

  • 9. Dr. Robert C. Worstell Get Yourself Scam-Free Lessons The first part of this book is developed into 9 lessons you can use to quickly get your life scam-free, or at least on the road to being so. While it won't stop pestering telemarketers from calling you, it will lower their number of calls drastically as you put the advice on these pages to work. Additionally, the material here can be applied to more areas of life than just commerce and online purchases or business opportunities. But they are only as useful as you test them out for yourself... 4
  • 10. Get Yourself Scam Free 1. What is a scam? Some Ground Rules of Life. I've been there, done that – and now I've been hard at work writing this up so you don't have to. But this isn't a book about the various scams that had me on their dirty end. Just take my “crib notes” from the School of Hard Knocks. Here are some basic rules of the scammer universe: 1. Scams are all around you as well as successes – you just have to take advantage of your real opportunities. 2. Nothing around you is permanent, you have to constantly create and and then build on any success you make for yourself. The only constant is change. 3. Most people are wired to be successful. Scammers are wired to find fast-profit, doomed shortcuts. 4. Only as you give is exactly how you get. This Golden Rule is inexorable – works all the time, whether you believe it or not. And you have to give first. 5. Educate yourself and learn how to learn. Learn from everything and everyone that comes into your life. Scammers prey on the naive. 6. Just be yourself – that's the best advice anyone can give you. Putting these rules to use in your own life Let's take these apart and see how you can use these to get your own 5
  • 11. Dr. Robert C. Worstell life scam-free. Scams are all around you as well as successes – you just have to take advantage of your real opportunities. A scam is getting an unexpected result. Mostly it involves paying out time or money or both and getting little or nothing back. Life goes on around you, regardless of what you think of it. Even if you know something is a scam, it doesn't make it stop. Sure, if you get enough people together, you can force those scammers to move on – but you can't get them to stop being scammers. That's up to them. And it's a personal choice – just like you choose to be honest. No one can force a person to be honest. They have to decide that it's better for them to be that way. The point of this book is to educate you so that you no longer have to be the unwilling effect of scammers. And that means government scams, Internet coaching scams, phishing scams, etc. You also have to see that your successes are just as real. And it's actually easier to be a success than it is to keep a scam going. Statistically, it proves out. Look for the real opportunities, take advantage of them, and enjoy your own success. Nothing around you is permanent, you have to constantly create and and then build on any success you make for yourself. The only constant is change. More that likely, you've already observed this fact. Especially in this age of Internet speed-up, changes happen quickly and routinely. If you look closer at Nature, you'll see that this is the same phenomenon at work. 6
  • 12. Get Yourself Scam Free Nature is always changing, even though some parts of it appear to remain the same. Trees are there almost as long as rocks. But if you really look closely, you'll see them change from year to year. And on a much shorter life-span, the grasses grow and die every year, and will change the diversity of the plants in any field with some variation every single year. Insects live out their entire lifespan within a single year and often within a few months. Birds live a bit longer, up to the larger mammals which can live a century or so. But none of these are exactly the same from year to year. Your own success is dependent on change. Money in your bank account isn't the same from month to month, and the banks and lending institutions change their interest rate more quickly now than ever. What is constant is your own ability to create right now in the present moment. And that is what really determines your own success. Scammers are accidents waiting to happen for anyone who touches their lines. But you aren't stuck to any accident or mistake you made. So stumbling across a person who is intent on their own personal profit isn't something you have to live with for the rest of your life. Just change what you are doing in the present and move on. Most people are wired to be successful. Scammers are wired to find fast-profit, doomed shortcuts. The upbringing most of us had was to follow the rules and live an honest life. What makes genius is the link these people have to inspiration so that they can see where a rule needs to be bent or broken to achieve a better result. Geniuses make things better through creative thought and 7
  • 13. Dr. Robert C. Worstell action. Scammers see rules as something in their way. If they can “make more money” bending or breaking a rule, then they can live with the result they get. These guys are the original “get rich quick” addicts. It's how they are wired. Everything is me, me, me. Creative geniuses work for the greater good. Scammers are in it for themselves. Two opposing ends of the scale. Making and keeping money is hard work. Even the best often go broke several times and can wind up bankrupt in a borrowed death-bed. Because when you only work for money you aren't working for building and giving value, you are simply working to maintain a facade. Money is only a fictitious symbol, not the real thing. Your family, your true friends, those people who trust you – those are the value you have in your life. All the people you have helped as you lived your life. And when you push and strive to constantly create and distribute value to everyone around you, there is no problem maintaining a valuable life style. Only as you give is exactly how you get. This Golden Rule is inexorable – works all the time, whether you believe it or not. And you have to give first. There is one natural social law, that you can prove for yourself. Whatever you give out is what you'll get back. Just like gravity, if you drop something with weight, it will go down until it hits something else. The Golden Rule is the same. Unbreakable, no matter how hard you try. Where people think they can get away from it is where they actually 8
  • 14. Get Yourself Scam Free just don't want to look at what they are doing to create their own surrounding world. If you go around being critical of people, you will wind up with a lot of critical people around you. Be angry and everyone you know will be angry when you see them. Be charitable, forgiving, honest – and everyone will respond in kind. Now, your returns aren't exact. Some people are working at being critical, angry, or selfish because they haven't yet realized this natural law. So they will continue to try to criticize you, make you angry, or withhold stuff that they could simply give you. But as you continue to treat them as you like to be treated, they will simply start to change their life around for the better. You may have to look harder, but the change is there, regardless. It's that point of “turning the other cheek” which will get their attention. Sure, this takes faith in humankind, but as you test this for yourself, you'll see that this is exactly how the Universe operates. Simply acting to give value to everyone you meet will get value in return to you. Educate yourself and learn how to learn. Learn from everything and everyone that comes into your life. Scammers prey on the naive. Life is said to be full of lessons. And luck has been defined as being prepared for opportunities and then taking advantage of them as they show up. Where people don't look for the lessons, or opportunities, they can live quite miserable lives. That is the pessimist at work. And to some degree, we most all have some pessimism which we have been taught and accepted in our lives. 9
  • 15. Dr. Robert C. Worstell But scammers only work by preying on the naive and those who won't learn. These are known as “stupid”. But factually, they aren't – unless they refuse to learn. Scammers usually have to take advantage of someone who is uninformed and then will move on to other people they have found. Because people learn from scammers and don't make the same mistake twice. Now, it might take a bit to wise up that they aren't giving you anything of value. Some (like Bernie Madoff) run elaborate schemes and continue to lie and deceive as they go. So it takes a while to get wise to them. Living is learning. Too simple. Look for lessons in everything you run across and do. This way you can constantly improve your life. All “mistakes” or “bad judgments” are temporary situations. Most successes had a string of “failures” that they had to learn from before they made it big. Getting scammed isn't the end of the world. It's simply another lesson to learn. Scammers set up their systems based on naive lack of understanding. Look, listen, learn. Just be yourself – that's the best advice anyone can give you. There is nothing better than having your own personal integrity intact. Integrity isn't something handed you at birth. It's a quality which you build in yourself, and it's what self-esteem is based on. You know that you know what you know. And you know why it is that way. Because you've lived life and learned as you went. You know that when you treat people fairly, you will get fair treatment in return. If you don't, then you have recourse. But it isn't getting revenge or “getting even.” It more that 10
  • 16. Get Yourself Scam Free you have additional lessons to learn and to teach in return. But being yourself is the best way to live life. And those who life a scammers' life will go nuts trying to figure out why you are acting the way you do. They just can't understand that mind-set. Personal integrity is like that old phrase, “Smile – it makes your enemies wonder what you've been up to.” And the joke is always on them. How you got into this mess – you aren't as stupid as they make you feel. With 95 percent of our thinking controlled by our subconscious, it's no surprise that Madison Avenue has made their living figuring out the emotional triggers which get us to act on their sales pitches. And that certainly applies to telemarketers. While we could (and probably should) go over the ethical application of these materials, what we have to take up first is this: It's not your fault that you've been a patsy – especially to telemarketers. Like they can see that big bulls-eye painted on your forehead when they talk at you. Even though they can't see your face, they really can tell exactly what your response is going to be about 95% of the time. Because most people only really act after they have been automatically triggered. And good telemarketer pitch-people know exactly what “buttons” to push which will get you to act. That's what their bonuses depend on. There are three people who have studied and published quite broadly on the subject of human motivation. Cialdini, Maslow, and Levenson. 11
  • 17. Dr. Robert C. Worstell Let's next take each of these up in turn, and I'll spend a bit more time on how you can defend against your own subconscious triggers. First, Cialdini... 12
  • 18. Get Yourself Scam Free 2. Cialdini and Influence To get yourself scam-free, you have to first quit being a patsy... A patsy, a chump, a dupe, a target, a victim - - you know, one of those guys with a big target on their back which says "kick me"... We're all that way a little bit. Even Professor Robert Cialdini, author of the book "Influence" admits he's one in the opening line. But after 15 years of research, he came up with an incredible book which is still being circulated and brought out in new editions with updates. I got a copy of his fourth edition after I read where a scammer said Cialdini had the reasons people will buy whatever you have to sell. That scammer missed the point. The reason Cialdini wrote the book was to help people get out from under all the mis-training they had received in their lives and start taking more control over it. • The first thing you have to do is quit kicking yourself. (It feels so good when you quit, believe me.) • The second thing is to really study how come you fell for their scam - hook, line, and sinker. The basic reasons (there are only 7, according to Cialdini) have to do with the way you were raised. But they are trained-in, not genetic, so you can un-train yourself. Six principles of influence. Dr. Cialdini laid out six principles: 13
  • 19. Dr. Robert C. Worstell 1. Reciprocation 2. Commitment and consistency 3. Social proof 4. Liking 5. Authority 6. Scarcity 7. (And a seventh, Self Interest, he found so common as to only include it as a footnote.) Reciprocation - give someone a gift and they want to give you one. With every free offer you give, always enable the person to pay you back in some way. Leaving their e-mail address is one. Including an ad for a low- cost service is another - or also include an ad for your main service, which gives them a choice of how valuable they think your initial free gift is. Commitment and consistency - get them to take a baby step and they'll want to take another and another. They also expect that once you've held their hand, you won't let them fall - you have to be consistent, too. Once a person takes a step toward a goal, they will be more likely to continue. You're opt-in is one such commitment. As you allow them to be consistent with their goal, they will take another. Build inertia in your buyers and not let them stop. Social proof (consensus) - people like to follow the crowd. Humankind is a social species. We like to know what other people like. They want to buy a popular product - a common solution that others have found workable. If you are starting a new product, then tell how 14
  • 20. Get Yourself Scam Free products like it, or products it was based on, have helped "countless thousands of individuals just like you to succeed." Allow people to herd. Liking - people elect politicians because they are most like them, not because they are able to do the job. Sales people who make the customer feel appreciated, who build up their esteem with honest compliments - these people get the sale more easily. Don't send a drill sergeant out to sell vacuum cleaners. Again, the honest smile and honest compliment will win the customer, not insincere flattery. People want to like other people in their herd. Humor can help here, as will being included in a common goal. Build rapport. Authority - the general always commands the troops, regardless of whether they like it. Credibility is one factor in this. Build your authority in their mind and they will be more likely to follow your request to "buy now". When people deal with experts, they can put their trust in them. If you only deal in absolute truth, you will win loyal followers. Scarcity - is what drives shoppers crazy on Black Friday, that they annually stampede when the doors open at 4 am. And pity those poor people who got knocked down every year. There is an Internet equivalent two days later, called "Black Monday" when people return to work to look for bargains while they should be doing their jobs. Both phenomenon are driven by scarcity. Ebay sees the same effect when the price on certain items skyrocket just before the deadline approaches. Self Interest – Really, this is pretty straight-forward: “What's in it for me?” And the salesperson uses this: “I think I can get you a really good deal.” ---- You can go over the above as a checklist of sorts for your own life, 15
  • 21. Dr. Robert C. Worstell but before you get into that, let's look at our next guest expert – Maslow... 16
  • 22. Get Yourself Scam Free 3. Maslow and your motivations I looked up an older set of principles to see how these might compare. Abraham Maslow wrote a paper in 1943 called "A Theory of Human Motivation". This theory contends that when people have met their basic, physiological needs, they will then work to satisfy their higher needs. Maslow based his study on exemplary and successful people. Maslow's work explains Cialdini's later research, and why sales works at all. People work to fill their basic physical needs first. Breathing, drinking, eating, eliminating waste, and having sex are basic needs of any person. If these are not met, you can find physical pain occurring. After these comes physical and emotional security. Security from crime or violence, security of job, security of finances (pay check and savings), security of family, security of health, and security of personal property. You have to be safe in what you own and where you live and where you work. Worry is found where these are not resolved. Social needs are next. These include friendship, sexual intimacy, and a supportive family. Belonging to groups and being able to give and receive love from others is a very prized solution. This gives the reason for bitter divorces and hatred of those who betrayed you. Esteem needs then follow. All humans have a need to be 17
  • 23. Dr. Robert C. Worstell respected, to have self-respect and to respect others. This is not just fame and glory. It also involves confidence, competence, and achievement. While you can be personally secure in your own self, it doesn't hurt when someone pays you an honest complement. See the actual strengths in a person and tell them so - they will feel better for it. Cognitive needs - acquiring knowledge and understanding. There are many phrases which say, "When you quit learning, you die." We are all seeking to understand the world around us. Aesthetic needs - expressing and appreciating beauty. People like to have beautiful surroundings and to look beautiful themselves. They will help people around them to become more beautiful. Beauty is more than skin deep. Growth needs - we don't stop growing as we get older. The need for evolution is constant and a basic drive. One is always seeking the next level. It's just the way this universe is set up. Plant a seed and watch it grow. Self-actualization - be the best you can be is not just a slogan. At the highest level, people are trying to make the most out of their native abilities and achieve the purpose that drives them in this life. We all seek to be our best - at whatever we've chosen to do and become. We all can't be Einstein’s or Bill Gates’, but we can be the best person we know how. Maslow had a great deal more to say about his theory. And you should explore this on your own. Wayne Dyer, who studied under Maslow, is a great help in this area - through his tapes and books you can learn many, many things about yourself and the world around you. 18
  • 24. Get Yourself Scam Free Our use of this is also to see how people work - what makes them tick. - not just to sell them stuff, especially at inflated prices with no delivery like scammers. Comparing Maslow to Cialdini, you can see that while some have used Cialdini to just pick the key points to use in triggering their sales, with Maslow's theory as a base, you can also identify your customer and see what they are most likely to want next. However, most telemarketers are operating on the law of averages and only 1) want to make their sale, and 2) resell your name and number to another telemarketer. Our point here is that you can use what Maslow and Cialdini wrote in order to figure out what you actually want and need from life, which may be wildly different from the group you deal with at work, what your friends think – or even what someone you respect and look up to regards as important. And that's what is really key in learning how to become “spammer- proof” There is another author to study, one who nearly died trying to live by life's rules – until he found out how the universe actually worked. Went by the name of Levenson... 19
  • 25. Dr. Robert C. Worstell 4. Levenson and your basic desires Lester Levenson was sent home to die at the age of 42. He had been a success at nearly everything he tried. Brilliant, he earned a full scholarship and received several degrees. Turning his hand to manufacturing, mining, and sales, all his businesses usually turned out successful as long as he was running them directly. Yet, his health continued to worsen, almost to spite all his success. Chronic migraines, perforated ulcers, and major cornaries (heart attacks) – these finally led his doctor to tell him to simply go home and rest. With the medicine at that time, he was told that any physical effort could be his last. So he was left with only his mind to work things out. Throwing away all that he had studied in school, he started simply analyzing himself from the inside out. In three months, he worked out what was bothering him and incidentally solved his health problems as well. What he discovered left him in such a high state that it took many years of study after that, studying all manner of religious and philosophical texts just to understand what he had achieved. For our use, this boils down to some very basic rules: a. The basic purpose all of use have is to survive through a human body, as an individual. b. This can be stated as simply three desires: - The need or want for security. - The need or want for approval. 20
  • 26. Get Yourself Scam Free - The need or want for control, or to escape control. c. That all these mental habits we have amassed are designed to deal with these desires. Any scam operating in life has one or more or all of these operating. Scammers will punch buttons you have to get you to agree with them that if you only buy their product, you'll get the approval, security, or control in life that you've always really wanted. They just want your money by giving you the illusion of partially fulfilling these desires. But desires, by their nature, cannot be fulfilled. The trick is that where you actually work out how to let go of these basic desires, then you can't be sold any scam-product after that. Just look at the ads on TV or any other medium and you'll see that they are all using these points to get you to buy: Security – All the pharmaceutical companies are trying to get you to tell your doctor that you need such-and-so product in order to protect and keep your health. Approval – How about that new car, the big house, the flashy clothes... Just what all these people say you need to be owning in order to be accepted in modern society. It's just what “everyone else” is wearing or owning these days. Control – Government laws are all about this. Getting people to do what is “good” for them, what they are “supposed” to be doing. And all our tax money they throw after pet projects doesn't accomplish squat. Like government schools – the highest budgets get the worst results. And 21

  • 28. Get Yourself Scam Free 5. Telemarketer Training: Getting a machine to do the dirty work I ran across this very apt description of the machines which are getting humans to call you. Remember, people are constantly improving these programs to do everything faster and better, at lower cost. Here's what you have with the average Internet Fraud telemarketer: They are people who are disassociated from the real world. They consider people a commodity - to them, people are merely numbers attached to more numbers. And they are playing a game of how many numbers they can accumulate so they can buy anything they want. They really don't care because to them, people aren't real. (It's a sick mind game they play with themselves.) But don't worry about hurting their feelings. Just realize that it's nothing personal to them. You can and should be polite to the callers - since (unless you are dealing with one of the owners), they are mostly consist of low-paid hourly workers with no real job security, as covered below. This excerpt is from Junkbusters.com: Assuming you have a human on the line, please remember that no matter how angry you may be about being dragged out of the shower, the human talking at you is not the real cause. He didn't decide to call you, a company did. He is just trying to make a living, in a job that isn't particularly pleasant or secure. He is generally known in the business as a TSR, or Telephone Sales Representative. (A more cruel name also used in the industry is "monkey-with-a-script''.) He spends most of his days attached to a chain of devices starting with an autodialer that calls numbers for him. If it's busy, it records this fact and keeps trying 23
  • 29. Dr. Robert C. Worstell to get you again later. It also removes the numbers that don't work or never answer. When you pick up the phone and don't sound like a fax machine, it knows to feed you to the next available TSR. The autodialer has far more phone lines than TSRs so if they are all talking to other people you are left to wait wondering who has called you. This practice (politely called predictive dialing by manufacturers, we call it presumptive dialing) saves the TSR's time (which the company pays for) at the expense of your time (which they don't). Some autodialers are programmed to call numbers simply to find lines that are disconnected, connected to faxes, modems, humans, or answering machines. If you hang up as soon as you hear that telltale clicking or background chatter, they just record the time that you answered and call you again later, after you've forgotten the useless interruption. If you're lucky, you'll be put through to someone before too long. The more technologically advanced companies can combine the information about when you answer with other demographic, psychographic and behavioral data they gather about you to help them predict: 1. when you are usually at home (by recording and analyzing the number of rings before you or your answering machine picks up, when your number is busy, etc.), 2. which products you are most likely to buy from them (by searching their databases to find what people with similar demographics bought), 3. what kind of TSR (male/female, pushy/polite) you will listen to longest (more databases, psychographics, experimentation and statistics), and 4. which script (programmed sales pitch) is most likely to be effective on you (lots more teamwork by marketing specialists, psychologists, statisticians and computer technologists). Companies can also buy this kind of information about you. One 24
  • 30. Get Yourself Scam Free of four major list vendors includes a "Connectability'' ranking, indicating on a scale of 1 to 7 how likely telemarketers are to able to get through to you. Some companies record everything you say, but most are now required by law to tell you this first. (Though in 1996 one of the "Baby Bells'' was still secretly tape-recording calls.) But there's nothing that says they can't take notes. As you speak, the TSR may be typing your answers into his computer so that it can tell him what to say in response. If he sounds a little slow reading the script at times, he may just be waiting for the computer to tell him what to say next. After the call is over, the data and results can be put into a database to help make future scripts more effective on people like you. If you sense a threat to your privacy here, remember that the thing threatening it is not human. It is just using a human's vocal chords. (In the included bonus “An Insider's Guide to Telemarketing”, there are several more articles on how telemarketers think about what they are doing and why they use scripts with low-paid workers to call for them.) ---- Next is to get them to stop calling you. • 31. Dr. Robert C. Worstell 6. Stop telemarketing using your own script - and maybe make some money at it. While I was researching a checklist to run down all the data you'd need in order to sue a telemarketer, I ran across this nice little script from junkbusters.com and left their links in place. Now, the key thing to know is that you don't sue for being telemarketers for what they are doing - they're prepared for that. You sue them for the technical details their calling guy loused up on. (Like no refund policy, or no written polity to send you about their do not call list.) Another point - I'm not giving you legal advice here - just like the disclaimer at the bottom. If you have doubts about this, consult a lawyer. But meanwhile, you can get a lot of data which will be useful for anyone trying to get a class-action suit against someone who's continued to call you. Finally, make sure you keep very clear (legible) notes and date them with the time. Because when you run through this script, you've just taken all the necessary actions to keep them from calling this number for the next ten years. And if they ever, ever call again, you have them where it hurts. Junkbusters' Do Not Call Telemarketer Script Every time you get a call you consider junk, just ask the questions in this script. If they answer no, you may be able to sue them. Be sure to put your phone number on the National Do-Not-Call registry by visiting http://donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382- 1222. 26

Simple: Treat your phone like your email - don't consider that anyone has a right to call you that you don't know. But don't just hang up. They'll keep calling back (as we went over before.) Once they've asked for someone, and you're sure you don't know them, just say, "No." and then hang up. This has cut my residual telemarketers down to almost nothing. Seriously. Why does this work? Because: 1. They immediately know that they have a “dud” lead - you're not a qualified prospect. 2. Their psycho-babble figurings say that you are just a no-sale. Doesn't matter when they call. The answer is the same, "No." 3. You free up that TSR/monkey to get back to more “profitable” leads. Their time is their money. 4. You don't waste your own time on the phone, waiting for the disconnect signal, being polite to stupidly persistent script-monkeys, etc. Their machines are set to dial back any no-answer indefinitely. • 37. Dr. Robert C. Worstell 8. Get yourself Scam-Free recipe The biggest thing we don't go over in this book is how to get a refund. One reason is because the various scams out there also have various recourse actions to take. And these actions can be found with any relevant research. But the real reason is that I've been working to get you all this data is so that you can see a scam for what it is and avoid the temptation and trap. You don't have to get the refund you didn't fall for. First, let's review what you've learned so far: Maslow told you that we all have a hierarchy of needs, running from the actual physical up through emotional, social, cognitive, aesthetic, growth, and right up to self-actualization. Cialdini told us that these needs have been hijacked by scammers who have learned 6 key points to use: Reciprocation, Commitment and consistency, Social proof, Liking, Authority, and Scarcity. Levenson showed us that the reason these 6 work for scammers is based on 3 single desires: 1. Security, 2. Approval, 3. Control. Through these three authors, you actually see how you are hard- wired, but also how you've been trained through social contacts and family training to become a victim of anyone who knows how to use these factors 32
  • 38. Get Yourself Scam Free against you. Persistent scams in society you should be aware of: 1. Advertising in any form. Not the same as promotion, although they can be interchanged. Advertising generally uses all the Cialdini and Levenson points in order to get you to buy their product. Promotion, especially local classified ads, simply tell you that something is available as a service or product for purchase or exchange. Most businesses have bought into this as an addiction. Look over advertising for yourself and see if what you are getting is not utilizing one or more of Ciladini's Influence points. 2. Credit Cards – essentially, telling you that you can put yourself in further debt in order to get instantaneous gratification. On top of this, they've got the Federal OCC to take control away from states so that CC companies could charge over 30% interest. But believe it or not, they get most of their money from tacked-on fees. Pay them off and stay away. Save your money (try 10% out of every paycheck) and use “old fashioned” checks and cash. Buy what you can afford, not what you desire. 3. Insurance – mostly a bet against your own ability and security. If you have saved money and invested, if you saved the same funds which you pay to insurance companies and put those into sensible investments, you'll have funds for accidents and so on. Work out your budget and stick to it. These guys scam you on fear. You can see the security, approval, and control points here. 4. Government in any form. While in the Golden Rule, you have to give before you can get, governments rely on taking before they can 33
  • 39. Dr. Robert C. Worstell give. And government is involved cheek-by-jowl with all the scams above. Any charity handouts by the government usually imply that you vote a certain way. Charity by private companies, groups, or organizations are usually really open-handed. Local government bodies are usually more sensible, since you can talk to them personally and they live where you do, but don't count on it Look over dealings you've had with any government body and see if they aren't using Levenson's points to enforce compliance. 5. Mainstream Media. If you really start looking over what you watch as “news” these days, you'll see that it is all slanted one way or the other. There is little difference between the tabloid journalism that passes for “news coverage” and the made-up dramas which follow. Blood, violence, cops, Feds, sex. What they cover is designed to do what? Keep ratings high so advertisers will continue to support them. And mostly they cover government officials' actions. See the pattern here? Anything you don't get the expected result from is a scam. But it really amounts to your own ability to decide for yourself and create your own life around you. The more choice you give up to others, the heavier your own shackles become. A recipe to become scam-free: Lester Levenson actually found that the biggest problem people had was not in that they were wired to be patsy's or dupes. It was that they kept holding onto whatever it was that made them that way. All the bad mental habits you have were learned – and can be unlearned. Levenson developed 34
  • 40. Get Yourself Scam Free techniques you can use to release these bad mental habits from your life and quit using them for good. The simplicity of these steps are: • Accept whatever it is that is bothering you. • And let it go. It's really that simple. Even if you don't think you can let it go, to some degree you already have. When you see you've been duped by some scammer, simply accept that as a fact. See the emotions behind it, the desire for security or approval or control – and then just let it go. Don't try to figure it out or think about it, just accept it – and then let it go. When you release in this fashion, those points are gone for good. At least as far as that particular scam. As you keep this up, you become more and more scam-free. As you learn from each of these situations, you'll avoid more and more. Now this doesn't mean you get completely free overnight, although it is possible. More likely is that you are going to find yourself releasing more and more situations you find yourself in where you don't get the expected result. And as you do keep releasing, you are then more able to simply treat the people involved in that situation as you would like to be treated. This will give you the best result. You want to start doing this with all non-optimum situations you run into. Do this all day long. That is the secret recipe for getting scam-free for good. 35

But it won't be good for you until you prove it to yourself. The point here is that you don't have to live a life which constantly has you at effect. You just need to get smart about how you life life from here on out. Releasing all the bad things which happen to you keeps the from happening again. So your life then starts getting better and better. Life and the Universe could be said to be scams on their own. But they don't have to be. All you have to do is wise up a little more. Get Yourself Scam Free Bonus: How to make yourself recession-proof Now that you've been through all about what used to make you a scam victim, you now know (or can easily find out) the basics of how to be ready for any recession. Let's review a bit and show you how this works: a) You know that per Maslow, we are here essentially to get up to self-actualization. And according to Cialdini, we know that there are 6 actions others can take to get us to do just what they want us to. Levenson then told us that this really just boils down to three key desires. b) You also know how to release these underlying desires and so will move away from those who are trying to manipulate your life. You no longer have to be the effect of scammers. c) Now, I also went over with you what some of the key scams which are running in society. They are all interconnected for the most part, and just want to keep you doing whatever makes them money. Here's where it gets really interesting. Anyone reading this who has figured out how this scene works can actually get out from under any of these addictive scams and start living their own life. Many of these now scam-free people find out that they can get and hold onto all the money they want in life. As well, their relationships with others improve markedly. Since they don't buy all the “miracle cures” out there from the pharmaceutical company ads, they quit having all sorts of side effects which 39

Back to our recession-proof idea: When you start making your own personal decisions based on your own common sense, then you can expect that things will start getting more sensible around you. But you have to get the nonsense scams off your lines: 1. Quit listening to the news media. Get your data from the Internet – only the data you really need. Quit listening to advertisements as much as possible. As well, take all politicians' statements with a sizable grain of salt. 2. Pay off your debts and cut up your credit cards. Maybe keep one for emergencies only. (But consult a professional for your finances as you need advice – I'm not one.) 3. Stick to your budget and save 10% or more of each paycheck to savings. And keep those savings as reserve until vitally needed. Purchase only what you can afford. Meanwhile, make sure you are providing valuable services and products of your own. 4. Use the Golden Rule to give more value in advance so that this comes back to you. 5. Keep applying Levenson's releasing techniques to get rid of all scam influences from your life. Now, the thing you must know is that recessions are cyclical. They happen every 6-8 years and so can be prepared for. Those savings become your investments. Most bargains are found at the bottom of a recession, and the person who is provident will have the resources to grasp those opportunities. 40
  • 46. Get Yourself Scam Free If you know just the simple datums you've gotten in this book, you can work yourself out of any economic scene, including job loss. Most of these scenes can be traced back to one or more scammer listed above. I don't need to go into this particular recession we're going through, but casual research through alternative media and the Internet show that it was caused by several of these scammers colluding with each other. The trick is to stay steady at your own goals, to be wary of those who scam for their living, and to be trusting to those who give you value open- handedly. Gather books and references which will help you regardless of economic upturns and downturns. There's a lot out there. Some are listed in the appendix. Study and restudy these to get more out of them every time. Know that you can do anything you want with your life. Anything. The only real limit you have is between your ears, so to speak. With these tools you've been introduced to above, you can reduce or eliminate those self-limits. But scammers are running a trip of telling you that you have to be the effect of them. Advertisers, governments, media – they all simply want you to do what they say. What they want is for you to just shut up and make money so they can take it with your “permission”. It's a form of slavery. When you apply the tools you've learned in this small book, you can permanently get rid of those shackles. 41

  • 48. Get Yourself Scam Free Part I – Masterworks on Personal Freedom Prelude Our quest for personal Freedom is really illustrated well in this tale of the misadventures of a young Ivy League professor. -oOo- The story begins with an academic who was researching in his university antiquities archive in the early 1900's and came across a misfiled piece of parchment. While it was in an ancient language, it was readable to this well-studied young man. It told of a repository of incredible knowledge which was found at the top of a remote mountain. In this place would be found all secrets revealed, all mysteries explained. The professor cross- referenced this data and found little except intriguing clues that the parchment was indeed authentic, and apparently hundreds of years old - that the area it refers to is also known by other texts as a forbidden area with many dangers. No accurate maps of the area existed at that time. And legends he consulted backed this up with tales of a mysterious mountain where people would lose their mind in searching for knowledge and power. As well, that these secrets were stored in this one location for the good of humankind, to keep them safe and secure. As the professor continued his research, this became a consuming passion with him, it started to invade his dreams at night - where he often found himself alone on a barren mountainside, ever climbing, despite torn clothes and scraped fingers, with a piercing, freezing cold wind that tries to 143

Even his friends note his haggard look and his students start spreading stories about the lectures where this young professor simply stopped in mid-sentence, looking off into the distance - transfixed by what he was thinking about. The professor finally realized that something must be done. He arranged finances for this journey, calling in all his favors and confiding in key university donors about what he expected to find on this mountain top - the secrets to all knowledge, all powers of the universe explained. And finally, he has just enough to cover a single person on this excursion, one his dean called "foolhardy" as that professor's request for a sabbatical was approved. Leaving notes for his friends and family, telling his landlady to not disturb his room while he was away, the professor hurriedly departed. His itinerary required him to take steamship, railways, and finally local mule- and llama-trains to the area where legend told the mysterious mountain sat. As he traveled, he asked the locals about the legend - did they believe it, where did they think it was. Most hadn't heard of it - those that did just smiled and shook their head, telling him nothing more. -oOo- But as he traveled deeper inland, he found more and more people smiling and saying nothing. He knew he was getting closer and concluded these locals evidently were simply keeping all these secrets to themselves. A few told him what he was looking for was incredibly dangerous - that the climb had often turned back those individuals who had tried. The mountain was treacherous, with screaming winds that tore climbers loose from their grip, and always shrouded in dark and forbidding clouds. They told of 144

Finally, the professor reached the remote valley which his research said lay just below the base of this mountain. Descending on foot down a zig-zag path cut into the hillside, he noticed that the valley was well organized into farms like a patchwork quilt as far as he could see. While the mountains surrounding the valley were cloaked in clouds, the valley itself was well-lit with plenty of sunshine for the growing crops. There was one building for visitors, an inn of sorts, with rooms to let. In the main room were climbing gear hung on the walls - some ancient, some modern. One caught the professor's eye – it bore the inscription of a famous explorer who had disappeared in this area just a few years earlier. Yet it looked like it hadn't been used, just left for the innkeeper to care for against the owner's eventual return. As his evening meal was brought, he asked his server about the legend. The old man's brow furrowed with worry and he silently looked deep into the professor's eyes - then the worry was replaced with laughter lines as his face lit up into a broad smile. But still, the old man wouldn't say anything about the legend. Instead, he asked, "You starting at first light?" The professor nodded. The old server just chuckled and turned, hobbling back to the cook-room. -0O0- That night's sleep was restless, the old dreams returned. As he climbed the mountain in his dream, he made a careless error and grabbed a loose rock formation which crumbled in his hand - just then the wind ripped fiercely across his back and buffeted him loose. He stumbled and then began falling - falling down into the foggy depths, flailing arms and 145

The first pale glimmers of light were starting to show and he heard the tinkling of bells as the herders arranged their goats for milking and feeding. Dressing quickly, he almost inhaled his breakfast and went to thank his host, who was standing near the doorway. As his innkeeper opened the door, he stopped the professor. One hand on his visitor's shoulder, the old man raised his arm and pointed to the nearest end of the valley - where the professor could see a clear path that wound through and finally disappeared as it rose up into the low morning fog. An easy walk, this fit academic wasn't even breathing hard as he reached the far valley end, and he saw this path become thinner and less defined by any use as it took him up beyond the valley's edge and into the waiting clouds above. Looking up, he could only make out glimpses of the mountain side. He was at the edge of the treeline now, and only very shrubby, small plants held onto life in and amongst the rocks and boulders. Suddenly, he whirled at a touch on his elbow. There stood a bent old man with a staff, his goats behind him. The man said nothing, solemn. But then smiled slightly, even wistfully. He spoke with a broken dialect, which the professor understood as composed from several ancient languages he'd only studied in his archives. This goat-herder told him that the path ended here. He'd have to make his own way from this point. He pointed up the mountainside, a direction to take up to the top. The professor tried to peer through the clouds covering that direction, but when he turned back to ask for more directions, the old man was gone. 146
  • 52. Get Yourself Scam Free The next long hours were just as his dreams had forewarned. Sharp outcroppings tugged and ripped his clothes, the wind was gusting and severe, the clouds thick and cold - he often would lose sight of his feet as he climbed on and on. But the worst didn't happen. He climbed relentlessly, careful to place each foot solidly, and ensuring each handhold was firm and secure. Finally, he reached a point where there was no more "up". Casting about in all directions, he could not find another, higher grip. Moving carefully around the mist-shrouded rock, he could find no other hand or foot-hold which would lead to any higher level. Had he reached the top? Where was this monastery he thought to be here, or was some ancient book or roll of parchment buried somewhere here? The wind increased suddenly and he quickly shrank back to secure his hold and footing, closing his eyes to concentrate on holding his place against the buffeting. It was then the light got brighter and the wind ceased. -oOo- He opened his squinted eyes slowly - to find himself holding on to a rock in the middle of a field, with pasture all around. It was a sunny day and goats were grazing all about. Instead of mountain, there was only the near- flat field covered with grasses. A few feet away, he saw a goat-herder - who turned toward him at the same time. Rising from the rock, the professor wiped his hands on his shredded tunic and walked over to the goat-herder. Surprisingly, it was the same face the professor had seen at the top edge of the valley. "Where am I, where's the mountain?" he shouted. The goat-herder smiled and replied to that young academic, "You 147
  • 53. Dr. Robert C. Worstell are here, you made it." Perplexed, the professor asked, "But I was climbing a mountain - where is it?" The goat-herder smiled even more broadly and said simply, "There never was a mountain. You were here all the time. “Congratulations - you've now arrived." -oOo- 148
  • 54. Get Yourself Scam Free Forward It is this exact point which lead me finally to write this last book. You see, by all the books I've studied and lectures listened to - as well as my own experiments down this line - we each already have all the Freedom, Happiness, and Peace we could ever want, just sitting there waiting for us to let it out. Just waiting for us to let our own light shine. That's the secret people have been looking for all this time, the one which the self-help guru's will sell you unlimited books, CD's, video's, and personal consultation to help you find. But like Dororthy's slippers, you eventually find that you've had the solution all along. This is the route to enlightenment which people have chased for so long, one which has lead some people around in circles, others to an early grave. It's only been in this Internet Age, where anyone can have access to all the ancient tomes and philosophies they want - without having to dig through musty archives, hoping they have the right university with the right data in their library archives. The trick is this one, simple datum: The limits you have, the only things holding you back, are those you have accepted - and these limits are all additive, not natural. All the Freedom, Happiness, and Peace you want is already found within you, so to speak. It isn't found by attending certain political rallies, or as a martyr for some cause. There is no government which can guarantee you any amount of freedom. No amount of money can buy it. No specific inherited DNA allows you to have more or less Freedom than the next 149
  • 55. Dr. Robert C. Worstell fellow. The amount of Freedom, Happiness, and Peace you can have is dependent on yourself. You set your own limits to what you experience in your lifetime. Check out any number of biographies and you will find these certain facts. The person's beliefs limit him more than any upbringing, family wealth - or lack of it. No particular race of people has had more enduring freedom than any other. What is true of freedom is also true of financial abundance, prosperity, good health, loving relationships - name a humankind condition of lack or want and you will find that the person themselves set their own limits to what they could personally be, do, or have. Study all the self-help authors you can come across. Download and distill all their books into simple basics and you will find (at least in the true bestsellers) a common theme and common approaches to these problems. And it's not just self-help. Take those distilled approaches and see if the myths and legends of history and pre-history don't abound with the same principles. Where there was success, heroes and heroines were able to discard the accepted "conventional wisdom" and replaced it with their own unlimited ideas of success - which they followed to make their mark in history. Backtrack all the financial wizards and the multi-billionaires who travel this earth. You'll find in each of them these same principles of unlimited wealth. Look up the people known as "healers" and you'll see they also subscribe to these principles - and their successes are with those who also subscribe and put their faith in these ideas of unlimited health. Where you can, seek out people who get along with everyone they meet. Interview 150
  • 56. Get Yourself Scam Free them and you'll find that they all agree that there isn't anyone they can't get along with - unlimited successful relationships. What are these principles - and how long does it take a person to find them? Well, for most people, it can take an entire lifetime just to distill these - others seem to be "lucky" and stumble onto them right off the bat. For me, after a half-century of living on this planet, I've spent the bulk of it in searching and studying for just these principles. The last decade has been devoted to simplifying them down to a single core set, which anyone could apply. In this last year, I finally uncovered the remaining last datum which would allow them to work for anyone. And so I sat down to write about it, so that you could know. ---- This isn't necessarily an easy route, while it is simple. It involves a considerable amount of work on your part. Some find that their results come easy, others find that what they are trying to achieve seems nearly impossible. And no two people find they have to invest the same amount of time, or that they can even get similar results by applying the identical data. There is a pair of old sayings which describe the exact problem we face in this area: 1. The ancient Japanese would say: "There are many paths up the mountain." 2. The ancient Polynesians tell: "No one school has all the teachers." 151
  • 57. Dr. Robert C. Worstell Zhese, together, tell of a story which is different for every single person on this planet. Just as we are all unique from each other, even as identical twins have their own separate identity - so do we each have our own unique path that we must find for ourselves to make this path up our own mountain to find whatever Freedom, Happiness, and Peace we want. So why, then, would I try to write a book outlining a common series of principles - only to tell you that it's different for everyone of us? While it varies in the details, your path still aligns to certain natural laws which cannot be changed by any individual within this Universe we live in. Those people who have learned or stumbled across these natural laws and worked out how to apply them for their own existence on this planet - these have found out how to create any amount of anything they want to be, do, or have in their lives. What I won't tell you here is that if you only apply a single law, like the Law of Attraction, or the Golden Rule - that either or both of these will make you rich, famous, successful, etc. There is a lot to learn - and we're both lucky I was able to boil this down to fit into a single book. This isn't the last of your study. It's only a guidebook. This is your scrap of parchment which tells you where to go, the broad and general outlines of what you must do. What you find as you climb your own mountain will be exactly what you want and need to find. And only you can do the climbing, only you can see that path to take - and you are the one who must choose which branch, fork, or side trail to take as you climb. Not all will be fruitful. Some will be dead-ends and you will have to backtrack. You're going to have to keep your eyes open for opportunities and be willing to learn and profit from the lessons coming your way. 152
  • 58. Get Yourself Scam Free But the only things which are keeping you from what you really want to be, do, or have - all that Freedom, Happiness, and Joy you seek - is only within yourself. Ideas and thought-processes which you've accepted over the years and piled higher and deeper to get the exact result of where you sit right now. What you see around you is what you've created. And if you want something better, you're going to have to re-create that world around you. ---- As we go along through this book, I'll try to keep it interesting, try to keep it short and useful. From time to time, I'll talk with you directly again. Finally, at the end, I'll provide you with a series of steps you can use if you want to improve your life with - drawn from all these famous authors and their stories which we'll cover as we go. All you really see here is the best path I've been able to determine for myself as I make my way up my own mountain path. But my path, I've found, depends on enabling you to find yours. Each of us needs help from time to time as we make our way along. I've had plenty, and it's time to give back. Or, you can take it another way - "A person has to give before they can get." Meaning that where I or anyone else wants to improve their life, there has to be a lot of giving in order to make these things come about. So this book is my gift to you. Pay it forward in advance yourself. See if it doesn't help you get to where you want to wind up - or maybe someplace better... 153
  • 59. Dr. Robert C. Worstell Introduction In this book, we are covering 7 authors whose data you should know, understand, and apply in your life. Many you have heard of, if you haven't already studied them at length: Dale Carnegie - "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and "How to Quit Worrying and Start Living" Napoleon Hill - "Think and Grow Rich" as well as "Law of Success" Charles F. Haanel - "Master Key System" Wallace Wattles - "Science of Getting Rich" Earl Nightingale - "The Strangest Secret" and his "Lead the Field" series Serge Kahili King - "Urban Shaman" and "Mastering Your Hidden Self" Lester Levenson - discoverer of the Sedona Method Individually, each of these can be used to gain your own enlightenment, to gain whatever you want to be, do, or have in your lifetime. This also explains their continuing success and best seller status. Each has devoted followings who are constantly reviewing their books, recordings, and any videos that exist by or about them and their teachings. Put all together, though, they make an incredibly formidable approach to solving life's mysteries and eliminating all lacks from anyone's life. In this short book, I've included descriptions or actual excerpts from 154
  • 60. Get Yourself Scam Free their books so that you can study and learn and improve your life the fastest way I've found. What you'll see here are digests of their material so that you can take the key points for immediate application to start right now and begin improving your life. You can take any goal you have for yourself and simply apply these data to them to speed up your approach and arrival. To my understanding, these 7 authors' works comprise a "universal solvent" for any of the humankind situations we all find ourselves in. A Universal Solvent has the problem of dissolving any container you try to put it in. The only practical container would have to be created out of the substance itself. For you, I'm offering this route of study so that you can quickly determine your own path in order to release the native Freedom, Happiness, and Joy that already lies within you. You'll find as you go that I've also disclosed to you exactly how nothing can be held secret from you, that you can readily find all solutions you need, that any situation you find yourself in can be readily resolved. In short, nothing can stop you or slow you down from here on out. Certainly, I won't say that this will be easy, or that whatever you want will show up tomorrow. You have to walk your own path. But I can and do say that these 7 authors - studied carefully - will bring a new level of enlightenment to anyone who does. And that all who do will be able to achieve a very high level of personal Freedom within this certain lifetime if they really want. It depends on you and what you want to do. How hard you want to work at it. How much you want to help others succeed around you. 155
  • 61. Dr. Robert C. Worstell There's an important idea here: you can't do this wrong. There are no mistakes you can make that are worse than what you've already been through. I'll tell you more about how this is fool-proof later. But right now, if you see something that you can apply right now in your life, then go right ahead and apply it. And all these authors included here have that same approach - put it to use right now. Right Now. But there's far more to cover. Here, I'll leave you to these too-short synopses and excerpts. I wish you all the best with your journey. Good Hunting! Robert C. Worstell 9 Dec 2009 156
  • 62. Get Yourself Scam Free Dale Carnegie – Certainty is Key We take up Carnegie first. Why? Because he tells a few basics which endure through time. Both deal with certainty - some call it self-esteem. Those basics were found when he was teaching public speaking - his craft for his entire life. It was his laboratory, as he called it. Through this, he was able to find and resolve questions of the human condition. Because he dealt with so many, many people and their varied life conditions. Lowell Thomas gave this tidbit as an entry to his book: "According to a cartoon by 'Believe-It-or-Not' Ripley, he had criticized 150,000 speeches. If that grand total doesn't impress you, remember that it meant one talk for almost every day that has passed since Columbus discovered America. Or, to put it in other words, if all the people who had spoken before him had used only three minutes and had appeared before him in succession, it would have taken ten months, listening day and night, to hear them all." And that was his library, his study hall. His homework was in helping people resolve their own problems through the only real tool he had - teaching public speaking. This was their journey to the soul of their existence. For some reason, this brings up all fears and also their personal certainty - the one tool every one has that banishes all opposition. Carnegie wrote two classics, among the many books he authored, "How to Win Friends and Influence People", and "How to Stop Worrying 157
  • 63. Dr. Robert C. Worstell and Start Living." He is known for both of these, as well as the many tomes on public speaking itself. And of course, he is also known for his legacy of those people he helped and those he taught to help others with public speaking. Certainty is the theme to his books. A tool you have to have in your arsenal - in order to release the native Freedom you already have, but still seek. Let's take apart his book "How to Win Friends..." to see how he approached this. He wrote a section about writing the book itself: "This book wasn't written in the usual sense of the word. It grew as a child grows. It grew and developed out of that laboratory, out of the experiences of thousands of adults. "Years ago, we started with a set of rules printed on a card no larger than a postcard. The next season we printed a larger card, then a leaflet, then a series of booklets, each one expanding in size and scope. After fifteen years of experiment and research came this book. "The rules we have set down here are not mere theories or guesswork. They work like magic. Incredible as it sounds, I have seen the application of these principles literally revolutionize the lives of many people." So why is a book on human relations so key in a course of public speaking? Simple: If you have no certainty of yourself, if you are lacking in self-esteem, then you won't be able to relate to anyone else around you to that same degree. If you are in a boat on a river, but then untie it to float - 158
  • 64. Get Yourself Scam Free leaving the paddles and any control or engine on the shore - how are you going to be able to help anyone else if you are out of control in your own life? Then - what tools do you need in dealing with others that would build your own certainty? Carnegie had three basic principles which explained all of human behavior - and these, where fully understood, give you complete certainty on how people act, why, and what you can do about this. Humankind is no mystery when you understand the basics, as you know what motivates them and how to help them get what they want. Incidentally, you also start understanding your own basic wants much better - and so can get your own goals accomplished more easily. Your route to freedom involves knowing for certain why people do what they do and how to get them the help they need so that they can help you. Carnegie listed these very doable and illustrated principles: "FUNDAMENTAL TECHNIQUES IN HANDLING PEOPLE "PRINCIPLE 1 -- Don't criticize, condemn or complain. "PRINCIPLE 2 -- Give honest and sincere appreciation. "PRINCIPLE 3 -- Arouse in the other person an eager want." Let's take that basic set apart to see how they work - and how they will develop certainty and into improved self-esteem. PRINCIPLE 1 -- Don't criticize, condemn or complain. 159
  • 65. Dr. Robert C. Worstell Who is going to listen to someone who is complaining all the time? And what are they going to say about you to the next person they meet? When someone criticizes you, or complains about your work - what is the first reaction? That's right - denial. Refusal. Take this back even a further step - when a person is being critical, they are actually overflowing from the negative thoughts they already had pent-up inside. Essentially, they aren't working to live in peace with their fellow travelers, because they can't live in peace with themselves. There is always that absolute certainty of the Golden Rule. Every time you "treat others as you expect to be treated" - what happens? You will then get people treating you that way. Look back at your own life for examples - when a person who is normally pleasant and treats everyone with an even take, the people around that person like to have them present. People who are snide, discourteous, or obnoxious - these have few true friends, and most distrust them. To my experience, successful people - the ones with continuing, long-term success at everything they try - those are the ones who mostly give everything away to help the guy next to them, and then have all this prosperity and abundance flow into them. For those people, if you talk to them, it's almost embarrassing. Sure, they know what they're doing and are experts at creating the effect they want. But they're working always to help the other guys around them create their effects. All that wealth, all that stuff that comes to them - it's just a back- flow. But it's not asked for and just shows up. So you'll see a lot of them giving it away to people who never got the chances they did in life. And a lot of these guys live well out of the spotlight, just doing what they consider "their jobs". So no one knows they could have been millionaires several 160
  • 66. Get Yourself Scam Free times over. And they make more millionaires as they go about "their jobs" than they even keep track of. Money, as Earl Nightingale tells it, isn't more than the measure of the value you give to others. According to Charles Haanel, money is simply a symbol - and those who simply go out chasing that symbol quickly have nothing to show for it. For those where people measure themselves by their bank account live in the worlds of the the rip off artists, the slick pitchmen, the snake-oil salesmen. While you may see them temporarily achieve great sums, these dissipate quickly - leaving their families and undertaker to pick up the pieces. Most criminal bank robbers, for instance, spend the majority of their time in jail, averaging several years to every dollar they temporarily amass. And those who make their monies from Internet ripoffs spend their lives in hiding - unable to enjoy the online world that the honest do. But that's a long way from where we started. The Golden Rule says you're going to get complaints and criticisms right back in your face - or behind your back where you can hear them, barely. PRINCIPLE 2 -- Give honest and sincere appreciation. Of course, this is the reverse of criticism. Being even painfully honest isn't all that painful. In fact, this is a way to gain all manner of honest dealings back into your life. Yup, that's the Golden Rule again. Your honesty, your appreciation for those around you - this is what brings all this into your own life. When you appreciate those around you and are honest with them about how they do things - that's where you get all the real and useful acknowledgment for whatever you do yourself. 161
  • 67. Dr. Robert C. Worstell Flattery - about as useful a sick cat at a wedding, or a rabid skunk at a town hall meeting. Because it's fake. It's not the Truth. Nowhere near it. Lies are just lies. And that brings up an interesting point. Truth isn't some sort of variable, wishy-washy mess of over-cooked vegetables in a stew pot. This is just a bunch of tripe cooked up by people who want it that way so they can just do whatever they want - and push their conscience back into the background. Look - that Golden Rule, no matter what version of it you live by - works the same. Every. Single. Time. There's no breaking it, no bending it, no moving around it or sliding by it on the side. So what you give is what you get. Give out. Get back. Too easy to live a life that way. But some people like challenges - so they set them out in front of them, maybe just to keep busy. But I wouldn't ask for a life like that - way too hard a life. Too difficult. The easy way, the effortless way is a simple one. Honest, straightforward - just like you want to get for yourself. Just too easy, too simple. PRINCIPLE 3 -- Arouse in the other person an eager want. There's nothing more valuable in this world than to be creative, to be "in the Zone." People have lived and died for the chance to do just that - and to be 162

So by encouraging people to do their best, you are really just encouraging people to let the success they already know - and just want to see again. And that's what's been the key to all commercial, military, and financial success in any century of recorded history on this planet.
