1. 1. Season Your Sermon with Illustrations
A Preacher’s Guide to a Great Sermon
Presented By:
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
2. 2. Add Personality to Your Sermon
As preachers and teachers, our primary objective is to teach the truth of the
Word of God.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
3. 3. Add Personality to Your Sermon
In doing so, we ought to stay faithful to the text and its meaning, preaching the truth in love.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
4. 4. Add Personality to Your Sermon
But, aside from that simple directive, there is not a manual outlining the particulars for how a sermon
should be delivered.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
5. 5. Add Personality to Your Sermon
Ifind that to be a beautiful thing because it gives the preacher the freedom to insert his own personality and wisdom into every message that he gives.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
6. 6. Relate the Sermon to Your Life
Illustrations and stories are one area in particular where the preacher is afforded a great deal of liberty in allowing his personality to shine through.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
7. 7. Relate the Sermon to Your Life
It is here that the preacher can pull from his own life experiences, work history, childhood stories, and so on.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
8. 8. Relate the Sermon to Your Life
For example, growing up I was always involved in athletics; so, whenever I have the opportunity to relay a point with an athletic metaphor, then I will take the opportunity to do so.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
9. 9. Lost? WORDsearch Can Help
Let’s face it, though; we don’t always
have the perfect illustration to get our point across.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
10. 10. Lost? WORDsearch Can Help
Whether it is a lack of life experience or whatever, we sometimes need help painting a picture that will help the congregation remember the point that we’re trying to get across.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
11. 11. Lost? WORDsearch Can Help
This is where WORDsearch’s sermon illustration resources can come
to the rescue.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
12. 12. Lost? WORDsearch Can Help
With over fifty (50) sermon illustration resources, you’ll never be short on quotes, anecdotes, and illustrations to liven up your sermon.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
13. 13. How WORDsearch Helped Me
As an example, I was recently putting together a study on prayer.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
14. 14. How WORDsearch Helped Me
After my study was complete, I wanted to add some illustrations to drive home some of the points, but I was struggling to come up with anything good.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
15. 15. How WORDsearch Helped Me
I decided to do a search and found the following illustration in Charles Spurgeon’s Flowers from a Puritan’s Garden (“In Training,” p. 270) relating prayer to training for a race, the perfect visual for someone like me:
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
16. 16. Paint the Picture
No doubt by praying we learn to pray, and the more we pray the oftener we can pray, and the better we can pray. He who prays by fits and starts is never likely to attain to that effectual, fervent prayer which availeth much. Prayer is good, the habit of prayer is better, but the spirit of prayer is the best of all. It is in the spirit of prayer that we pray without ceasing, and this can never be acquired by the man who ceases to pray.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
17. 17. Paint the Picture
It is wonderful what distances men can run who have long practised the art, and it is equally marvellous for what a length of time they can maintain a high speed after they have once acquired stamina, and skill in using their muscles. Great power in prayer is within our reach, but we must go to work to obtain it. Let us never imagine that Abraham could have interceded so successfully for Sodom if he had not been all his lifetime in the practice of communion with God.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
18. 18. Paint the Picture
Jacob’s all-night at Peniel was not the first occasion upon which he had met his God. We may even look upon our Lord’s most choice and wonderful prayer with his disciples before his Passion as the flower and fruit of his many nights of devotion, and of his often rising up a great while before day to pray.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
19. 19. Paint the Picture
A man who becomes a great runner has to put himself in training, and to keep himself in it; and that training consists very much of the exercise of running…
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
20. 20. Drive Home the Message
That illustration was just what I needed to drive home the importance of having a consistent and fervent prayer life.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
21. 21. Drive Home the Message
What’s more, given my background, the illustration wasn’t forced or out of place; it fit my personality and what the congregation expected to hear from me.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
22. 22. Illustrations From WORDsearch
With the wealth of sermon illustration resources that WORDsearch offers, you’ll never be at a loss for finding the perfect illustration for your sermon or lesson.
WORDsearch|Sermon Illustrations
