  2. 2. Background <ul><li>Date of birth: 8 Oct 1924 </li></ul><ul><li>Married with 4 children </li></ul><ul><li>His family was one of the families who were already living in Singapore when Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in 1819 </li></ul>

Positions <ul><li>Former Minister for Social Affairs from 1963-1977 </li></ul><ul><li>Member of Parliament who represented Pasir Panjang Constituency between 1963 and 1977 </li></ul><ul><li>Prominent Malay journalist </li></ul><ul><li>Rose to become the deputy editor of the Malay language newspaper </li></ul><ul><li>Join the PAP and was elected as Assemblyman of Singapore </li></ul><ul><li>Completed NS with a rank of Major </li></ul><ul><li>Held the post of Director of various corporate companies and was also a Board member of Sentosa Development Corporation </li></ul>
  4. 4. Early Life <ul><li>Othman Wok was born to a teacher and principal </li></ul><ul><li>He got enrolled in a Japanese school during Japanese occupation </li></ul><ul><li>Excel in Japanese in school </li></ul>
  5. 5. Contributions to Singapore <ul><li>As a member of PAP he was opposed to the pan-Malay movements (that lead to two riots in the 1960s) </li></ul><ul><li>He became Singapore's ambassador to Indonesia and served on the boards of the Singapore Tourism Board and Sentosa Development Corporation after retiring from active politics </li></ul>
  6. 6. What happen after he fielded as a PAP candidate in 1959 in the Malay-majority <ul><li> Some Malays accuse him of being a traitor and was a target of abuse </li></ul><ul><li>However, Othman Wok didn’t give up </li></ul>
  7. 7. Impact on Singapore <ul><li>Introduce racial harmony </li></ul><ul><li>Lesser racial riots </li></ul><ul><li>Things he did was one of the factor that led to the separation from Malaysia </li></ul>
  8. 8. Summary <ul><li>In a nut shell, we could conclude that Mr Othman Wok is a great Leader with courage and perserverance. We know this because when he join the PAP, he was regarded as a ‘traitor’ to some of the malays but he persisted and continue. If he hadn’t did what he did then, there won’t be a Singapore now. This implies that Mr Othman Wok is a wonderful Leader which made what Singapore was today </li></ul>
