  7. 7. Symptoms of hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism, also referred to as an underactive thyroid, is a condition in which thyroid hormone production from the body's thyroid gland becomes abnormally low. This has far reaching consequences as thyroid hormones play an important role in physical and mental growth and development, and in helping to keep many of the body's cellular processes (metabolism) working at the correct pace. • Fatigue • Muscle aches and joint stiffness • Brittle nails and lifeless hair • Dry skin • Weight gain • Constipation • Fluid retention • Heavy menstrual periods in women • Mental slowing or concentration difficulties The complete book is available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Permanently-Hypothyroidism-Exercise-Shortcuts-ebook/dp/B008G07F5Y/ Copyright © 2012 Caroline D. 8. 8. Chapter 2: Dietary considerations for hypothyroidism Copyright © 2012 Caroline D. Greene The body needs iodine to produce thyroid hormones but too much iodine in the diet can be as harmful as too little. • Good sources of iodine include: • Saltwater fish and seaweed • Eggs • Yogurt, milk, and hard cheeses • Watercress • Iodized salt This means that when eating a diet containing the above foodstuffs, taking further iodine supplements is unnecessary. 9. 9. Chapter 3: Healthy food choices for hypothyroidism Copyright © 2012 Caroline D. Greene "Good" Fats and "Bad" Fats A healthy diet requires fat, but creating a healthy, balanced diet requires gaining an understanding of the difference between the so-called "good" fats and "bad" fats. 10. 10. Chapter 4: "Everyday" Healthy Food Choices Meal Planning Planning your meals in advance is an effective way to ensure that you always have the ingredients you need to prepare healthy, nutritious meals readily available in your refrigerator and store cupboards. However, it's not always necessary to plan every single meal in advance; meal planning is all about planning a balance in your meals and looking at your diet as a whole. The complete book is available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Permanently-Hypothyroidism-Exercise-Shortcuts- ebook/dp/B008G07F5Y/ Copyright © 2012 Caroline D. Greene

  12. 12. Chapter 6: Hypothyroidism and exercise Guidelines produced by the American College of Sports Medice recommend that a healthy adult should take part in moderate intensity cardiopulmonary exercise for 150 minutes each week. Cardiopulmonary exercises work the heart and lungs, and moderate intensity is achieved by raising your heart rate and breathing rate above normal levels without pushing yourself to the point of feeling out of breath. This is problematic for hypothyrodism sufferers as a general weakening of the respiratory and heart muscles often leads to shortness of breath even when not exercising. The complete book is available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Permanently-Hypothyroidism-Exercise-Shortcuts- ebook/dp/B008G07F5Y/ Copyright © 2012 Caroline D. Greene
  13. 13. Chapter 7: Starter Weekly Exercise Program Monday: A moderate intensity walk of 15 to 20 minutes. If possible, walk with a friend for support and encouragement. You will know you have achieved the correct level of intensity when you are able to have a conversation as you walk, but your sentences become shorter than normal between breaths! Tip: as you become fitter, you may choose to lengthen your exercise session or incorporate more challenging terrain in order to maintain a moderate level of intensity throughout.
