    1. Walsall Learning Centre Introduction to IT
    2. Available IT Facilities
      • There are 5 IT Labs:
      • WL003 – drop in – ground – colour printer
      • WLb03 – group work - basement
      • WLb04 – group work/teaching - basement
      • WLb06 – silent room – basement
      • WLb05 – drop in – basement – houses IT Help Desk, scanner pc, video editing pc, web cams, pcounter top up machine, colour printer.
      • Group Study rooms – top floor – 2 are drop in, 3 may be booked at the Information Help Desk
    3. IT Facilities
      • All users need to register
      • Your username will be your student number. You will be asked to choose your password
      • This username and password will be used to:
        • log on to PCs
        • access email
        • access WOLF
      • Registration also generate users Personal Storage Space and your PCounter account
    4. Personal Storage Space
      • 200mb of space on the server.
      • Access through My Documents
      • Can access from home via the Internet
    5. My Documents
      • We recommend this as the primary location for saving work
      • Newer PCs do not have floppy drives
      • All PCs have USB slots
      • Save work to a USB Memory Stick or burn to CD, as a back up
      • Always shut down a USB device before removing it from the PC
    6. Printing
      • All students have a PCounter account which enables them to print from any PC
      • When you print a document, you will be told which printer your work is being sent to
      • A receipt will be printed off, for which there is no charge, for every job you send to the printer
      • If you have a problem with a print job, take it and your receipt to the IT helpdesk

      • Printing to a black and white printer costs 5p per page
      • Printing to a colour printer costs 40p per page for A4 and 80p per page for A3, even if what you are printing is not colour
      • If you do not have enough credit for a print job, it will not print at all
    8. To check your credit, move the cursor over the pound symbol.
    9. Printing
      • You can top up your credit in the following ways:
        • Using cash via the top up machine in WLb05
          • The machine accepts £1 or £2 coins or notes. No change is given.
        • Using a credit/debit card via the secure payment page listed on the IT services website
          • Minimum online payment is £5
    10. Photocopying
      • Also uses your PCounter account via your university Print/Copy card
      • This card needs to be registered to your PCounter account via the machine in WLb05
      • Photocopiers are usually referred to as MFDs or Multi-Functional Devices
    11. Photocopying
      • You can also send print jobs to the photocopiers
        • Printing black and white documents costs the same as using a printer
        • Printing colour documents is cheaper than using a printer
    12. Printing to an MFD
      • To send a print job to an MFD, select WA-PQ002 as the printer
      • Go to the MFD of your choice, press 2 to print.
      • Swipe your print card through the slot on the right of the card reader
      • Select the document you want to print from the list
      • Press enter/yes

    14. Printing to an MFD
      • You need to ensure that all the settings are correct before you send a job to print
      • This means making sure paper size is correct and that you want full colour
      • If you print a colour document, all pages are treated, and charged, as colour even if they are black and white
    15. First select printer WA-PQ002. Then click on Properties Select Color before printing
    16. Logging Off
      • It is very important that you remember to log off once you have finished using a PC
      • If you forget to log off and someone else uses your printing credit, there is nothing we can do about it
      • Also, if you do not log off, anyone can access your work in My Documents
    17. Other Facilities
      • Wireless Network
        • The building has a wireless network installed
        • Users need to download and install Cisco Clean Access before they can connect to the network
        • CCA will then ensure that a laptop has all the necessary Windows security updates and up-to-date anti-virus software
        • If you do not have anti-virus software you will not be able to connect
        • F-Secure anti-virus software can be downloaded from the University server free of charge
    18. Other Facilities
      • Laptops for loan
        • We loan laptops for a week at a time
        • There is no charge, but late return fees are £20 a day
        • All laptops are wireless enabled
        • Any work done on a laptop needs to be saved to either a memory stick or other removable device
        • Any work left on the laptop will be lost when it is logged off
