  • 1. “The future is already here…
it’s just not very evenly distributed…”
    - William Gibson
  • 2.
  • 3. Today’s public library…
  • 4. with a presence in every community across the country…
  • 5. is largely outdated…
myopic in terms of scale and scope…
    …and decaying…
  • 6. We’re lost in a digital world…
without a platform of our own…
    ?
  • 7. We are abandoning communities,
    leaving people behind….
  • 8. A true digital public library could help with this…
  • 9. Let’s revitalize…
  • 10. Ok?
  • 11. have
    a phone?
  • 12. …is it a smart one?
  • 13. Let’s start building…
  • 14. You will need to become a curator…
    you and your staff…
  • 15. It will be a lot of work…
but nothing we are not trained for…
  • 16. What will we do?
  • 17. Curate your environment, annotate your community…and mine…
  • 18. Weave the public library into every space…
  • 19. …how?
  • 20. lots of QR codes…
  • 21. And augmented realities…
  • 22. Lots of objects,
    and lots of spaces…
  • 23. Watch.
  • 24. You can create a library branch in the morning
with QR codes, paper, tape, and lamination.
    We did.
  • 25. Create a lot.
    People will use them
  • 26. Partner with everyone in your community.
  • 27. Deliver and share
    knowledge, information,
    materials, and culture…
    Where it is needed…
    or most convenient…
    or surprisingly helpful…
  • 28. Let people check out
    kids books
    at the playground
  • 29. Grab some music
    at the gas station
    for the commute…
  • 30. Scan a recipe
    At the market…
  • 31. You get the idea.
    It works.
  • 32. Have a box of old photos
    nobody looks at?
    Or a digital archive
    nobody uses?
  • 33. Make it a living part of your town…
    Use augmented reality…
  • 34. What about your books…?
QR code them, weave them into the digital world…
  • 35. Don’t think people will use it…
    Let’s look at the numbers.
    • African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to own smartphones than whites.
    • 36. More than half of cellphone users will have a smartphone by the end of 2011
    • 37. When asked what device they normally use to access the internet, 25% of smartphone users say they mostly go online using their phone, rather than their computer
    • 38. More Americans own a smartphone than hold a BA degree or speak another language in their homes
  • Or better yet…build something,
    contribute, and see for yourself…
    Seriously.
  • 39. Use your building for digital literacy
    Teach, enable, let people practice…
  • 40. It’s about the public…
    these people…those kids…this street…
  • 41. It’s about experiencing knowledge…
    And bringing it to life…
It’s freedom of access to information
    and inquiry, options, and choices…
  • 42. It’s not about meta thinking…
    or politics…or academia…
    It’s NOT about a building.
    It’s about building.
  • 43. We are already building…
  • 44. One object, one place
    one community at a time…
    Join us and help…

  • 46. Oh, and 2 other things…
  • 47. Don’t forget to map it…
  • 48. And funding…?
  • 49. Don’t you think it’s time
    public libraries had
    a microfinance platform?
    We do.
