The author grew up in a family that enjoyed eating meat, including exotic game meats, as the main course. Upon moving to San Francisco for college, the author noticed the prevalence of vegetarian and vegan bakeries, grocery stores, and restaurants. After receiving dirty looks while shopping for veal at a local grocery store, the author realized they needed to incorporate more vegetables into their diet for health reasons, despite being told meat was essential. The author now mostly follows a vegetarian diet but still eats meat sometimes, making sure to have vegetables as a side.
