Importance Of Water Importance Of Water Presentation Transcript

  • The Amazing WORLD OF WATER Presented by
  • What do you know about the water you drink?
  • Do you know where it comes from?
  • Water is critical for all living things.
  • Without water, there can be no life.
  • Water provides some good clean fun, too
  • Earth is called the “water planet”... 80% of it is covered with water or ice but less than 2% of Earth’s water is drinkable..
  • One part oxygen plus Two parts Hydrogen = WATER
  • The WATER CYCLE is controlled by the sun.
  • Water never stops moving...
  • Heat from the sun evaporates the earth’s oceans, lakes, rivers and ponds.
  • Water vapor rises and forms clouds.
  • Vapor cools in the clouds and forms droplets that fall back to earth as rain, sleet or snow.
  • The water runs off into lakes, rivers, and streams and back to the sea to be heated again...and the cycle starts over.
  • Amazing facts about WATER • Water is the most common substance found on earth. • The human body is about 75% water. • The average person uses about 175 gallons of water a day!
  • Lots of things come in gallon containers… Here’s what a gallon of WATER looks like…
  • We drink only A TINY AMOUNT of the water that is treated for our use. Here’s how we use it at home:
  • Did you know…? • Water is the only substance on earth that naturally exists in all 3 forms – solid (ice), liquid (water) and gas (steam).
  • Some more amazing facts about WATER • It takes 2-7 gallons to flush the toilet. • A leaky faucet can waste up to 100 gallons a day! That could add up to 36,500 gallons a year!
  • More amazing facts about WATER • A 5-minute shower uses 25-50 gallons! • A dishwasher takes 9-12 gallons for each load.
  • A dairy cow needs 36 gallons of water to produce 12 gallons of milk!
  • Some more amazing facts about WATER • An elephant is 70% water! • A person can live about a month without food, but only about a week without water.
  • WATER is a valuable natural resource! We can’t afford to waste it! What can we do to...
  • YES! KIDS CAN CONSERVE!
  • HERE ARE 6 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP SAVE WATER!
  • #1 Take shorter showers… Shorten a 10 minute shower to 5 minutes and save at least 25 gallons of water!
  • #2 Fill it up! Fill up the dishwasher… running it only half full wastes water.
  • #3 Just to rinse! Don’t run the water while you brush your teeth... just to rinse the brush and clean the sink!
  • #4 Fill it up - again! Use the correct settings on the washing machine… partial loads waste water, energy and money!
  • #5 Stop the DROP! Find a leaky faucet around the house? Tell a parent so it can get fixed! Leaks waste water.
  • #6 Learn to share… Have fun in the sprinkler if it is on for watering the lawn. Water “toys” can waste up to 200 gallons each half hour!
  • Kids can make a difference… every gallon matters! Waste not… want not!
  • The water we conserve today… can serve US tomorrow! www.stopthedrop.org
