Initial Career <ul><ul><li>After obtaining my hotel school diploma (Hotelschool Oostende) in 1982 , I worked for about one and a half year as ‘Chef de Rang’ at a four star hotel in Kortrijk (Hotel Broel). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To progress my career in the hotel business I decided to move to South Africa, were I joined the 4-star Mount Grace Hotel in Magaliesburg as ‘restaurant manager’ and was promoted a few months later to ‘duty manager’ . </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>I left the Mount Grace end of 1985 to take up a position as ‘Functions Manager’ at the Imperial Hotel (now part of the Protea Group) in Pietermaritzburg. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>I was very lucky to be hired as ‘Junior Assistant F&B Manager’ at the famous Durban Royal Hotel (member of The Leading Hotels of the World) in July ’86. </li></ul></ul>12/23/2007 Wim Van Respaille 'In Pursuit of Excellence'
  3. 3. Mid Term Career <ul><ul><li>By change I was offered the position of ‘Resident Manager’ at the beautiful Damier Hotel in Kortrijk (Belgium) in July 1988. The Damier, a full service boutique hotel (50 elegant rooms) with remarkable history was just taken over by Mr. De Clerck, a famous businessman (Founder & Chairman of the Beaulieu International Group). Although all guests were welcome, it was primarerly a hotel to pamper the Beaulieu guests. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>After getting married to Leen Gailliaerd in 1990, we made the decision to return to South Africa to progress my professional career in top 5-star hotels. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>In March 1991 I started as ‘Senior Assistant F&B Manager’ , responsible for all food services at the Mount Nelson Hotel (Owned & managed by Orient Express Hotels) in Cape Town. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>After my first daughter was born in 1992, we decided to move to Johannesburg, as the salaries were substantially higher there than in Cape Town. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>So I took up similar position at the Sandton Sun & Towers (Now the flagship of InterContinental Hotels in Africa). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>I was assisting with the the operational planning and opening of the annex 230 rooms Towers Hotel in 1993. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>In July ’93 I was offered my first ‘F&B Manager’ position at the 5-star Sun International ‘Royal Swazi Sun hotel, country club & casino’ in Swaziland. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>As my wife was pregnant again, we returned to Belgium were I did assist her for approx. 2 years with taken over + starting up her own press agency in Westende (Belgian Coast). </li></ul></ul>12/23/2007 Wim Van Respaille 'In Pursuit of Excellence'

General Manager <ul><ul><li>Beginning 1998 I became ‘General Manager’ of Flanders first 5-star Park Lane Hotel in Antwerp (178 rooms / 81 FTE staff). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>After 2 years, Radisson SAS took over and kept me one as ‘General Manager’ (as requested by the owners and not the choice of Radisson Sas). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>As the reporting structure (with many restrictions on my management style) changed I decided in May 1998 to take up a new challenge and took the position as ‘General Manager’ & crisis manager of the Royal Astor Hotel in Ostend (95 rooms/25 FTE staff). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The Royal Astor was taken over by the Dutch Krasnapolsky group and became member of Golden Tulip Hotels in 1999. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>So I planned the renovations and implemented the rebranding. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>In April 2000, the owner of the Grand Hotel Damier , asked me to return and offered me ‘carte blanche’ to make the hotel profitable, whilst being undoubtly the leading hotel of the region and research the possibility to increase room capacity. </li></ul></ul>12/23/2007 Wim Van Respaille 'In Pursuit of Excellence'
