Product Review: GE Caulk Singles - Presentation Transcript

    1. GE Caulk Singles: Tear, Squeeze, and Toss Written by W.D. Thigpen Word Count- 530 June 2008—Published online www.associatedcontent.com Caulking. Hmm ... not exactly a word that evokes images of a glamorous or an easy task. Now, is it? GE Caulk Singles is on a mission to change this image with their silver, pouch-like boutique packaging. Everything about this product, including the great Web site at www.CaulkSingles.com, says upscale. GE says that this package is easy-to-handle and great for one-time use. Caulk Singles are available in paintable acrylic and waterproof silicone. You can buy them at Lowe’s Home Improvement, Ace Hardware, True Value, and Do it Best stores. But do call ahead if you are going to a smaller store. My local Ace Hardware was unaware of the product. Luckily, Lowe’s was nearby. Walking by the colorful how-to books at Lowe’s always makes me feel excited about a new project. Arriving at the paint center, I spied three shiny displays of GE Caulk Singles. The price marked on the package says $2.48. Yikes! That seems a little pricey for just over one ounce. The silver pouch is so cute and says: TEAR, SQUEEZE, and TOSS. So, I have to try it. OK, I’m at home with my pouches. Yes, I bought two: one paintable acrylic and one waterproof silicone. The pouch has peel-off directions on the back, but for some reason the layers would not separate. Part of the directions were missing. Oh, well, I should be OK. Remember, it says: TEAR, SQUEEZE, and TOSS. I can do those things. Well, the tearing part did not work. I had to use scissors. The task at-hand: caulk the large, thirty-six inch gap between the wall and the kitchen counter. Any remaining caulk will be used on the stairway and trim moulding gaps. OK, now for the squeezing. I was not sure how much pressure to apply to the pouch. Initially, I did not squeeze hard enough and then I squeezed too hard. I ended up with a blob of white acrylic caulk on the side of my counter. I quickly pushed it into the crack and resumed squeezing again.
    2. It’s been a while since I have caulked anything. I forgot that it’s best to squeeze out a little bit at a time and then push it into place. Also, it’s a good idea to have a wet paper towel handy, as this can get very messy. After sixteen minutes of squeezing, pushing, and wiping the caulk into place, I admired the pearly white strip now connecting the counter and wall. It reminded me of how much I need to paint the wall. Amazingly, the pouch still contained enough of the GE Caulk Single to repair a twenty- four inch gap on the stairs. One caveat about the stairs, they should have been sanded smooth before the caulk application. It looks like I have room to improve on my prep skills. And for the final step: TOSS. Yes, I was able to make it into the trashcan. Overall, the GE Caulk Single project went smoothly. The product is relatively easy to use, but is difficult to remove from hands. I think it might have been easier to use if it actually had an applicator tip. I’m not sure that I would spend $2.48 again to buy this product, when similar products with application tips are available at comparable prices. Free samples are available online at www.CaulkSingles.com, for a limited time. Get yours today and get ready to TEAR, SQUEEZE, and TOSS. ###
