Inspired by the work of the photographer Herb Ritts, the diminutive Belgian designer sent out glamazons in jersey dresses sliced in diagonal designs. A floor-skimming gown was cut across the body, leaving a leg exposed, or a top came segmented into triangles held taunt to the body with black elastic straps or strips of metal. The sporty/sexy style, with models’ hair slicked back and their lips a glossy black plum, did have a few pieces that could be worn during the day, in particular aopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? • patchwork faux snakeskin top, city shorts cut with clever dévoré insets at the pockets and a round-shouldered black jacket with sleeves out of the same dévoré fabric. To wear one of Mr. Vaccarello’s designs a woman would have to be both fit and fierce, a challenge that quite a few will want to take up next summer. Limi Feu came up with a graphic two-toned approach for her collection. Using blocks of black and white, red and black or cobalt blue and white, the designer brought some dynamism to her loose shirt dresses, tunic tops and oversize jackets. The idea of duality in design also was interpreted through the fabric. Panels of lace were slotted into a black floor-length skirt while a “split personality” top was sliced down the middle, with one side in mesh (worn with a pink star pasty for the model’s modesty). Even the leggings had each limb in a different shade. The tattooed models bopped along the runway to rockabilly tunes, their curlicue “early Gwen Stefani” hair swinging in rhythm to the music. For Ms. Feu this was a rather upbeat show that didn’t push the brand in a new direction but combined comfortable clothing with a cool girl attitude. The designers Kaito Hori and Iku Furudate always have very original inspirations for their collections. And the way they blend them together is what keeps their Commuun collections so interesting.open in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API pdfcrowd.com
    • This season the ideas were: styles of the ’60s, a scientist working in nature and Japanese architecture. And the result was a streamlined show with linear silhouettes and sharp lines (both in the cut of sleeveless jackets sliced open at the chest and the tiers of a multilevel dress.) The print of a hummingbird in flight, its wings blurring on the body, gave an urgency to the quiet designs as did dresses with color blocks that faded down the body. The show was urban but also elegant and proved that daywear can be directional without being dramatic. Drama was the downfall of the Aganovich show, which started with a man inopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API pdfcrowd.com
    • white clown makeup reenacting an interview with the artist Francis Bacon, turning the event into more performance art than fashion show. Once the drawn-out introduction was over, the round central stage was set up with a circle of mirrors turned toward the audience, still waiting in the sweltering room for the first piece of clothing from Nana Aganovich to show up. When it finally did, the collection celebrated transparency, building out of layers of semi- sheer organza and blending colors into the many levels of the designs. Unfortunately the asymmetrical result was rather bulky and the matronly silhouette, not helped by chunky low-heeled shoes, made this show feel old before its time.
