The Declaration of Independence
was signed on July 4, 1776. But the
British and other Europeans did not
recognize it or us as a nation until
later, when we won the
Revolutionary War. The end of the
Revolution is usually marked by the
Treaty of Paris in 1783, with the
recognition of the United States as
an independent nation.
