  • Item zero: EVERYONE LOVES A BUFFALO
  • Rule number one: if there’s no objective to what you’re doing, if there’s no way you can prove the return on investment, then WHY BOTHER?What needle are you trying to move? How will you know if you’re successful?! Know your objective. Prove ROI.
  • DO YOU?
  • @MagicRecs is great as it makes MAGICAL RECOMMENDATIONS on whom you should follow on the Twits. Basically, you get one DM a day (max) telling you if a particular person on twitter has just been followed by a bunch of your friends. This is REALLY useful for finding out new news, BEFORE IT HAPPENS.
  • News Feeder is a collection of the most creative facebook posts from brands. And it’s awesome.
  • Sort by recency, brand, category, and agency…
  • So if you want to know what AKQA or BBDO or BBH are doing, then GO LOOK.
  • While we’re talking about Facebook…
  • LOOK! NEW FACEBOOK STUFF!
  • NEW Newsfeed!
  • Focus on MEDIA CONTENT (not live yet, but good to know about)
  • New newsfeed – no more EDGERANK. It is just called the NEWSFEED ALGORITHM. Key things: last actor and story bumping.
  • Facebook has confirmed that competition and promotion entry mechanics can now officially include liking a post, commenting on a post, having fans post on your page’s timeline or asking people to send your page a private message on Facebook. Some restrictions do remain, however. Facebook still does not allow a competition mechanic to include sharing a post, entering with a hashtag, posting on personal timelines and tagging the brand in a personal status or photo.
  • THIS IS AN ATTEMPT AT HUMOUR
  • One last stat -
  • LOOK AT THE DAILY ACTIVE USERS FOR MOBILE!!! THAT’S. MENTAL.
  • Chrome plug ins are awesome. Seriously. Look.
  • While not strictly SOCIAL they can still add value.
  • HeyGirl.IO – change images on any website to PICTURES OF RYAN GOSLING.
  • AND rage memes!

  • Next up: where do you/we find cool stuff? Try these places -
  • Adverve!
  • Brandflakes for Breakfast!
  • GoKicker (the latest one to my collection – thanks to @superblue – and awesome)
  • Super Punch – random inspiring geeky stuff
  • Iheartpundits – the best punditry from across the internet (endorsed by Tyler Cowan!)
  • MASHABLE IS ACTUALLY QUITE GOOD (SOMETIMES) TOO
  • Do you know the law?
  • YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THIS.
  • For example. If you’re paying a celebrity to tweet about your brand or content, you need to make it clear with either of these hashtags.
  • Next: people LOVE lists – that’s why you’re here!
  • Why am I showing you this? You all know about this… so why? Well, look at those last two. Notice something? Sponsored posts. One from Honda and the other from Jose Cuervo. These BIG LIST posts, that you see on BuzzFeed and the like, are open to partnerships and sponsorships. Keep that in mind when you’re thinking about the breadth of your campaign work.
  • If this, then that. It’s a really useful social tool for monitoring, tracking, hell… even GAMING the internet.
  • Hands up who uses RSS? Anyone? ANYONE? Bueller?
  • ALL OF YOU? GOOD! Google Reader is dead, but Feedly is now here and y’all should be using these feeds to stay on top of your sources of inspiration!
  • 11. Your random twitter recommendation of this presentation is… PRINCE! AMAZING! @3RDEYEGIRL! FOLLOW HIM!
  • LOOK AT THIS AMAZING TWEETS! MORE INSPIRATION!
  • Have you done anything with Tumblr yet? Youknow Ogilvy has a partnership though, right? Let’s talk about some of the best Tumblr work we’ve seen…
  • What is DISPOSABLE MEDIA? Disposable media is what your social media will be. *WHENEVER* you’re creating content, think about the half-life of that content; how long will it be seen for (by an individual)? Quality is of utmost importance, but think about the *quantity* of time that will be spent consuming it. If you’re lucky, your three minute video WILL BE SEEN for THREE MINUTES. Throw that into the myriad of alerts and tweets and adverts and brands that are fighting for attention… you too could be famous for 15 seconds.
  • Let’s talk short-form. Vine (six seconds) now has 40m users (although it’s not been revealed how many are ACTIVE users)Airbnb wants to make the first VINE feature filmJohn Lewis have launched a VINE competition on the hashtag #whatmattersmost
  • We touched upon this earlier: but if you’re thinking social, you NEED to think MOBILE. MOBILE FIRST. How will my content, my ad, my video look on a mobile screen? Then tablet, then – and only then – on the big screen.
  • CATS.
  • PANDAS.
  • GOATS. It’s a JOKE that I’m standing up here saying this BUT Cats, Pandas, and Goats are THE holy trinity of social media content. It is hard to think of any content that could not be made better through addition of one of these three animals. Cats: see IKEA last year. Pandas? See the Ogilvy Cheng Du work. Goats? GOOGLE THE SCREAMING GOAT AND LAUGH!
  • Asda are now putting hashtags and twitter commentary ON THEIR FOOD. http://www.marketingweek.co.uk/news/asda-to-add-social-media-recommendations-to-packaging/4007697.articleRemember the Book of Mormon Metro wraparound? This is like that. The key takeout: does your campaign have a hashtag? People will talk about your content online, if they don’t have a shared conversation anchor to rally around, you’ll lose track of the chatter and your idea will pass like a ship in the night.
  • THANK YOU!
  • Oh yeah, AND MAILING LISTS!
