Away we go

 1. 1. Away We Go.
2. 2. Burt: “Do you promise to let our daughter be fat or skinny or any weight at all? Because we want her to be happy, no matter what. Being obsessed with weight is just too cliché for our daughter.”
3. 3. Verona: “Yes, I do. Do you promise, when she talks, you'll listen? Like, really listen, especially when she's scared? And that her fights will be your fights?”
4. 4. Burt: “I do. And do you promise that if I die some embarrassing and boring death that you're gonna tell our daughter that her father was killed by Russian soldiers in this intense hand-to-hand combat in an attempt to save the lives of 850 Chechnyan orphans?”
5. 5. Verona: “I do. Chechnyan orphans. I do. I do.”
6. 6. Why don’t we see these couples on Tv? Or in most Movies?Or even in many books?
7. 7. Probably because they are rare.
8. 8. As rare in real lifeas they arein works of fiction.
9. 9. And this isn’t at all going to be a “mAn, jOhNkRasInSkIiSsUcH a DrEaMbOaT; I WiSh He WaSmYbF!”
10. 10. Because that’s just too cliché,for this daughter.
11. 11. It is
12. 12. However
13. 13. a lament
14. 14. of sorts.
15. 15. The images that we see
16. 16. of love
17. 17. and long-term companionship
18. 18. Are rife
19. 19. with all kinds of
20. 20. crazycrazycrazycrazycrazy.
21. 21. And we are taught that
22. 22. love is
23. 23. holding a boombox blasting peter gabriel over your head
24. 24. or boning whoopigoldberg
25. 25. because the ghost of patrickswayze
26. 26. is inside of her…
27. 27. !!!
28. 28. See?All Kinds of Cray-Zay.
29. 29. And even when I know better,
30. 30. Because I had the warmestgentlestmost beautiful example
31. 31. of love
32. 32. and long-term companionship
33. 33. in the homes in which I grew up,
34. 34. I am also remindedon the daily
35. 35. that love is
36. 36.
 37. 37. With the focus so largely on all of the
38. 38. CRAZY
39. 39. As if the crazywas proof
40. 40. of real love.
41. 41. Where are the Maya Rudolph women that know who they are and won’t marry john krasinski when he’s having a crazy spell because she knows what she believes?
42. 42. Or the john Krasinski men that go down on their girlfriends enough to know when they taste different?
43. 43. Or the Maya rudolph women that are mature enough not to judge their partners when they code-switch while talking to their boss?
44. 44. Or the John Krasinski men that will call their partners cuntsuckersloudly on a crowded train?(to get the baby’s heart rate up, duh…it’s really a sweet scene.)
45. 45. Or the couples that have much more to them
46. 46. than the love they’re in.
47. 47.
 48. 48. See?All kinds of CRAZY.
49. 49. And I’m not trying to deny that the crazy exists,
50. 50. Because it surely has its place
51. 51. In loveAnd long-term companionships
52. 52. But my frustration lies in the fact that we focus so much on these emotional highs and lows, with images of the crazy bombarding our eyes and heads and hearts,
53. 53. that we forget that when we are in love
54. 54. real love,
55. 55. we feel enough security in ourselves and our partnersthat we don’t need to focus on the love that we are in,
56. 56. just as when we are in good healthwe don’t need to focus so much on
57. 57. breathing in
58. 58. breathing out
59. 59. because it is natural, second-nature, a part of us.
60. 60. And though breathing is vital,
61. 61. when we are in good health,
62. 62. we focus on other thingsand we can do those things better,
63. 63. because we aren’t preoccupied withour breathing.
64. 64. And maybe if we shifted our focusin our works of fiction
65. 65. Our daughters and sons
66. 66. would be less
67. 67. Cliché.
